I was afraid of that. Wonder why Sony won't add this feature when they have Minidv Cameras that use ac3? Maybe sometime.

It could be a useful feature, but has some not-too-obvious functionality issues that need to be thought out before being implemented.

Also AC3 is not intended to go through multiple generations of encode/decode, i.e.: audio->AC3->audio->AC3 like what would be required for Vegas to open an AC3 file, process it and then re-encode it as AC3. This can cause some audible quality issues.

Snag a copy of BeSweet - it will convert your AC3 files into WAV which can be used in Vegas.

Great tool, BeSweet. Get it here and click on "stable" and you can get BeSweet and a gui for it.
