Vegas 5 in Pro Audio Review Magazine

John_Cline wrote on 10/7/2004, 11:21 AM
I just got my latest issue of Pro Audio Review magazine where they had a look at Vegas. The only reason that I bring it up is that the reviewer, Stephen Murphy, gave Vegas a very positive review and said that the Sony Vegas forum has, "tremoundous community spirit" and that it is, "easily one of the most active and helpful forums (he) has encountered." Thanks, Stephen!

John,
This is SOOO True. I run a recording studio on the side, and i use Steinbergs Nuendo.

If you want to see customer support at its absolute worst, that would be it.

They adopt a "Everyone's a spy" mentality. We beg for info on simple functionality patches and they protect it like it were the original copy of the bible. Forum folk have continually complained, but they dont care. They upgrade their product, but rob basic functionality from it. The jump from Nuendo 1 to Nuendo 2 was huge, but it took away too many tools i rely on.
They NEVER finished N1, released N2...its code is so whacked that N3 is a couple of months away....ALL paid upgrades, mind you! So the Steinberg graveyard is littered with N2 and N1 at about 90% finished.

NOT to mention the Paid Beta Tester Mentality they have adopted. You pay for an upgrade that is far from bug free. THAT is the main reason i am here. My early days in video were with Pinnacle, and their Beta Test Mentality drove me to Vegas...which turned out to be life changing.

This forum is Nirvana! Its as good as it gets, with polite and generous members and a Friendly yet very active Moderater staff.

I dont know if it gets any better than it is in here......

Vegas forum, its always 78 degreees in here..........its just wonderful!

Further to the Nuendo comment - Steinberg's treatment of Cubase SX is even worse. I think SX3 has essentially been a beta-test for Nuendo 3. And the aquisition by Pinnacle has not helped things either; I think the "features first, stability later" mentality evidenced by Pianncle Studio is being passed on to Steinberg.

outside this forum -- the capabilities of Vegas as a full blown multichannel audio tool have been vastly ignored by many ..

for working with many formats - i would pick Vegas over PT or N2x any day for most things --though just like the video side, Vegas needs to tighten up working with timecode and machine control outside of dv.

it is good see Vegas getting more and more attention and i trust that the stability of Vegas stays - over the prospect of more features over function and stability mentality of many software companies (including certain OS's) .

"And the aquisition by Pinnacle has not helped things either"

The Pinnacle forums are absolutely FULL of people with problems and complaints. For quite some time, I was one of the most vocal critics there. Pinnacle products are worthless, every one of them.

Not sure if anyone here has you pinnacle dvd-impression pro? But it is probably the most buggy software i've every used. It has been out for so long on the shelves but they have never made an update in the last 3 years.Their forum is just ridden with angry customers. Well done sdpn!

Nah....that's not true. Commotion Pro (discontinued now) is a GREAT product.

Vegas's audio is so good that I now only use Sonar for MIDI. I render that stuff to audio as soon as possible and export it for the real fun in Vegas.

I know there's some feeling over the audio forum that the developers upgraded more video features than audio recently, but I always take a benign view of the "is it/should be developed primarily as an NLE or a DAW?" fight. It reminds me of "Taste Great/Less Filling!" The fact that one could argue for Vegas as a tool either way says a lot about this little piece of software.

And I note my entire Vegas 5 installation directory is a whopping 49 megabytes.

As I've posted in other threads, if Vegas added MIDI and VST/VSTi support, I could drop Cubase for good. The ability to write music using virtual instruments (such as Garritan Personal Orchestra or Kontakt), and edit the video simultaneously, would be a dream come true. Not to mention original - I can't think of another product that can truly do both well. I think ACID does MIDI and VSTi, so it can't be a huge jump to integrate it into Vegas. I think Sony would be surprised at the large number of audio types (like myself) who are dabbling with video, and find the interface in Vegas intuitive due to it's audio heritage (read - large base of potential customers).

Sony...Please!?
