Come on Guys & Girls! Get to answer Liam's Poll ! Neat idea Liam - I'm very grateful you've put yourself out for us. But 6 responses?!?!?! PLEASE ! Get over to the site and vote now . . .IT is for your own good!
I think this will be really cool. I'd be happy to host an "on demand" streaming version on a WM9 server. Looks like Windows Media is on the way to a landslide victory.
Survey was a piece of cake - I left my contact info for you. Thanks!
<tongue in cheek ON>
Well I guess we should not do this at all then should we!
<TIC off>
I somehow did not think that a dialup user would have the patience for downloading a 100Mb file... but I guess we are all used to some substantial render times (on those complicated projects) so maybe that assumption was invalid.
I've got a co-worker who downloads a new Linux image file (695MB or more) every week on his dialup at home. It takes about 30 to 60 hours on his 56K modem depending on how good a connect he gets. I keep telling him to let me do it for him here in the office over our 2400Kbps DSL line, but he likes feeling like he's accomplished it himself.
Thanks to all who have responded to the poll. I have included the results below. Your answers helped me to understand the proportion of you who would be hanging around to view the video very soon after we post it to the web site.
In view of the results I upped my "bandwidth" capability on my streaming video server from 10Mbit up to 100Mbit... so I think we will likely be OK with hosting the video on my server initially. I'll look to get the file farmed out to others if I notice any dramatic problem with the bandwitdh availability on my server. I have a 500GB monthly allocation .. so we'll see how close we get to that!
A few of you have suggested we use this new (and very intriguing service) called "BitTorrent" to share the distribution of the video. I am tempted to give this a try... but... on the other hand I feel a little uneasy about asking people to load yet another piece of software onto their systems in order to view the video. The concept of BitTorrent is quite amazing... just not sure I want to go there right now.

If you are going to NAB we'll also try to get little video clips of everyone from the forums... so don't be shy! Let's put faces/voices to the names!
