Vegas 5 stalls for quite awhile - anime video

Hello,

PC Spec: Athlon 1.2GHz and 512mb ram.
OS: XP Pro

I did not have any problems editing .AVI before. But suddenly Vegas 5 stalls when I try to edit an .AVI anime (Japanese animation) video.
The size of the video clip is around 180mb.

I import the video clip and the building clips for the import takes extremely long! (stalls at 0%)

Is it because it is an animation video clip? Importing digital video to the media pool never took this long. Any solutions? TIA.

It's likely because of the codec used within that AVI file.... all AVI files are not "equal"... AVI simply is a container for a video that is "stored" inside of it using a partcular "codec".

You may need to install the authoring codec (which in many cases not the same as the player codec). Find out specifically what codec is used in the AVI and you may find an answer.

it may also not reconize the audio codec used - or it is a vbr mp3 ..

I have that problem with divx-codec AVI files.

Try using Bink and Smacker's RAD VIdeo Tools to convert the file to AVI uncompressed (or no codec) to put into Vegas.

From Vegas, you may wish to convert that to DV AVI which takes less hard drive speed.

Be sure to check sound sync.

that is sure a lot of time needlessly .. specially going through all that and then converting to DV ... Bink(bik) and Smacker(smk) video encoder was designed primarily for console games encoding ..

B_JM, that's the best solution I know of. There's probably a better one out there, but this one is kind of free and it works well enough.

virtualdub is a much better program -- unless you need to create .bik Bink files or smack files ..
