A scroll wheel on a mouse can be used to zoom in or out on the timeline.

I don't think it can be made to jog/shuttle the timeline.

Go take a look at the Contour ShuttlePro.

It's great for this.

Oh, you're in for a pleasant surprise! This was posted a few months back. A real find. It works in V4, hopefully will still work in V5:

Put your mouse over the scrubber control and move your mouse wheel back and forth.

Neat, eh?

I have different buttons on my logitech mouse and assign them to shift, control and alt.

This way I can scoll with the wheel and do all sorts of nice things.

Yeah that works great for the up and down scroll wheel, I think he was talking about the side to side scrolling (left and right). Most of the new Micorsoft Mouses or Mice or whatever not only have a up and down scrolling wheel but they also have a side to side scrolling feature as well, the scroll wheel actually tilts from side to side so you can scroll left and right.

Maybe assign the side-to-side wheel to J and L and the middle button to K? I haven't seen the mouse, but the J-K-L keys may be able to be triggered somehow to give you some scrubbage.
