Vegas 5 to work only with SONY dv cams (JOKE)

The Wall Street Journal reported today that with the purchase of Sonic Foundry assets by Sony Digital, the next generation of Video Vegas will work only with SONY digital video camcorders. Sony expects to leverage the sale of it's high priced camcorders by packaging them with one of the most flexible and full featured Non-linear editing systems on the market. By purchasing the assets of Sonic Foundry, SONY has been able to enter the software market far ahead and at far less cost than if it had developed its own products. The next version of Video Vegas will read code from a processor in the camcorder that will identify the camcorder as a SONY.

The nice thing about technology, there is always something around the corner that is better and cheaper!!!! I'm still satisfied with Vegas 3.0c

Well, at least we might now get MicroMV support built into the great Vegas Video product;-) I know I am missing out not being able to use the Vegas capture utility.

Thanks God, I don't use/own any Sony stuff except TV. I hate Memory stick. :)

Analog capture RULEZ! :) plus it's non-discrimnating!

I may be naive, but how could they make Vegas only work with Sony cameras? Are they going to come out with a new (not iLink) interface? If not, how does the capture software know what kind of camera it is talking to? Isn't part of the beauty of IEEE 1394 it's compatibility? If they did try to make it work with only "new" Sony cameras (I.E., came out with a non-standard interface), that would probably be about as popular as BetaMAX for home recording.

I doubt VERY MUCH that its true. Sounds more like a wild rumor. For example how would you open a file on your hard drive for editing?

It's a joke! May fool!

What's wrong with Memory Stick? It's great. My PD150 can store something like 700 stills onto a 128mb piece, then it has a great USB reader. I mean, it's the same really as using the other flash cards. And the form factor is easier to handle...

Or perhaps not? ;)

I am not a DirectX or device driver developer. But I think it may be possible that Vegas can use the driver to get the Camcorder information. If it can get the Camcorder information, it is very easy to do in Software point of view. So, if it is Sony, Vegas will continue to do the capture. Otherwise, it will stop. When I connect my Canon GL1 into my computer. The Device Manager will show "Canon DV Camcorder" in Imaging Devices. Therefore, there may have a way for the software to query this information from Windows. Is there any device driver developer? Can you answer this?

I know already this thread was started as a joke, BUT in theory at least some features such as capture could be (sure hope not) limited like as the joker suggested limiting an important feature such as capture to only a specific range of cameras... starting with version five. Like only supporting the latest models from Sony. This of course would be a very dumb marketing decision, sure to anger MANY users and only backfire. I don't think Sony is that stupid. Geez, I hope not.

As far as is it possible? The short answer is sure. I learned a lot of my beginning computer stuff from a real computer guru that had a masters in computer science and a PhD in math. His pet saying was if you can do it with pencil and paper, I can do it with a computer. The scary thing was he could, well almost. This was way back in the early 70's when computers filled a good size room and weren't anywhere near as fast or as powerful as they are today. Imagine what this guy is doing now. <wink>

He was just being cynical about Sony---

The problem Memory Stick is not industry standard. Not other brand use it. It's all about Sony. I am not a Anti-Sony guys. Sony makes a lot of good stuff like TV. That's why i have the Sony TV. In the computer point of view, I don't like sony at all. In the Digital Camera world, I like Canon and Nikon more. It's all personal choice. But I will stay with the industry standard. Look at DVD-RAM disk. It's a BS in consumer world.

you just forgot profit and buissness.
Why sony will reduce the people who use it?
that's nonsense.
kf wrote on 5/3/2003, 2:24 PM
I try to answer tserface question. I don't care how sony do their business. I just don't want to see the product and the software company disappear. I am a developer too. There is a big problem with software company in this few years. Good Luck.
