Vegas 5 wishlist.

Jessariah67 wrote on 10/18/2003, 12:14 AM
Mark Williams (mark2929) gave the following wishlist for Vegas 5 in a recent post:

1)Rotoscoping

2)better keying

3) Freshen up the interface with splashes of color.

4)Film look tools.

5)The Titles could do with improvement

6)perhaps some paint tools

7) cloning

Personally, I think #3 is a "who cares" -- give me a Vegas in "greyscale" any day over a "colorful" Premiere -- but I think it might be interesting so see what others are thinking. I'd love to see a MUCH better text engine in VV5. As for most of the rest of the list, I think it might be time for someone (Sony?) to develop a plugin pack that acts as a lite version of AE or Boris -- for those of us who'd like to do some painting, keying, elaborate text movement, etc., but don't need all the "bells & whistles" (along with the 4-figure price tag) of the SFX apps that are currently out there.

What do you all think?

I just wish there was a DVE effect so you could easily scale/rotate/crop a layer. The "Event Crop/Pan" interface is essentially backwards from what you want most of the time.

I hate to say no to anything but I do think there are tools that are more part of the core of vegas and should be concentrated on. Of the ones above I'd say keying and titles are most important because they're already there in the program. It's more important to me to make the existing tools really good than to add new ones.

The pan and crop tool would be more intuitive (to me) if you had a constant viewport and moved the media around within it. Currently the media stays still and you move the camera around like an animation stand.

I'd love to see third parties making tools for Vegas though. A paint and vector tool would be kind of cool as a plugin application.

As far as interface color? I actually could have used it last week because I had Vegas split into a bunch of smaller windows so I could refer to another app behind it easily. Would have been nice to make all the vegas child windows a unique color so that I could tell it apart from the rest more quickly.

Jessariah Thanks for this xmas wishlist thread.

I couldent agree more.

An after effects for vegas that can accept plugins from other manufacturers would take vegas into the no 1 position of NLEs. How could any other edting system justify or compete. Based on the same idea as AE and same sort of pricing.

AWESOME

Are you Listening Sony... Vegas 4

My biggest Vegas beef is in the timeline scrubbing.

If you compare scrubbing the same footage in Vegas and After Effects, you'll notice that the experience is way nicer in AE because you have a stick instead of a loop region and the screen updates way more responsively (giving the impression of a much faster computer).

One of the things AE does to accomplish this is that it uses Adaptive resolution. The faster you scrub, the lower the resolution of the frames you see. Essentially it automates the conversion from Best to Draft modes. The main thing is that it feeds you as many frames as your machine can pump whereas Vegas just doesn't give you the frames.

I like the loop region concept, but I wish you could flip to a "stick mode" where you have a stick like AE or Premier. I'm not sure if you call that thing a stick or a cursor... I hope everyone knows what I mean.

As far as reotroscoping, layering, more fancy titles, vectors, painting, layers, that kind of thing, all possible now with Boris Red. Expensive, but excellent. Comes as a stand alone and plug-in combination for Vegas. Been out a month or so.
mark2929 wrote on 10/18/2003, 11:53 AM
Billy Boy It looks great Still cant use Magic Bullet though. What about using outside plugins like keymatte will it do that too.

What I would like is a standalone, that can accept all the Competitors plugins Like AE. But the competition cant use their Plugins.

Perhaps Its because of this AE Is cleaning up.

Rob & Bob,

I disagree with your pan/crop beef, because the track motion is where you can "move" your panned/cropped image around. You have to look at it as two stages -- make the picture you want, then put it where you want.
hookmeister wrote on 10/18/2003, 7:32 PM
oops found an answer here on another thread.

I'd like a quick lock to timeline for any clip... like a toggle padlock for when i'm placing 5-10frame clips and working out tight stuff.

That said.. i want to thank Sony / vegas for having superb color/exposure that lets me shoot in ways that could not be done without costly extra lighting equipment and time on another setup. Both camera and software are the best combo i have to get things done fast and clean.

TITLING - Definitely have to hit on this.

ROTOSCOPING/ 3d TEXT EXTRUDE - Would be nice.

As far as dressing it up a bit... I would like to see it look a bit more attractive. It really doesn't look like the 'Professional' tool when a client is used to seeing Avid, FCP, or Premiere. All of the lines, bars, and buttons are 'blocky' and 'square-like'. If they were more 'rounded' or 'textured' it would be cool. But I use WINDOWBLINDS and can assign it a Skin Scheme so it looks pretty cool with color combinations that you would never think of. From futuristic, to cool, to far out, to... well, you get the picture.

Some will never know how much I giggle, snicker, laugh, slap my knee and so on everytime I see somebody daydream about the name Vegas not being "professional", or they don't like the packaging, the color of the interface, or they wish for more fancy knobs, el al.

Geez... if you could look in the cockpit of a 767

this will have to do:

http://webpages.charter.net/flyian/757-767/mainpage.htm

you would see row after row of high tech gadgetry all designed to help fly the plane and tell the crew what the plane is doing, none of the equipment is designed to look pretty. Further I don't care if the pilot is wearing Joe Boxer underwear. I do worry that he knows what to do if some warning light goes off. Frankly if you're more worried what a client thinks about how your tools "look" then the work you do with them, then you probably don't do very good work and it doesn't matter WHAT tools you use.

ROTOSCOPY TOOL pleaseee...

Thanks
Jessariah67 wrote on 10/18/2003, 11:20 PM
I have to agree with Billy...get off this "how it looks" crap...

I work in a 5' X 6' room. Yes, that's right -- 30 SQ. feet. (I have to move my desk chair to close the door and if I have to entertain a second person for an editing or VO session, I literally have to remove the keyboard from my office).

Pro Tools was THE end-all, professional app. VERY impressive. Yet, I know two different studio owners who have sunk 5 - 6 figures into their "Pro Tools" setup who think Sonar, Vegas, Cubase & the wide array of DX plugins out there match up just fine.

Pull out all the toys you want -- what you hand me as your finished product is all I care about. Any client worth their salt is going to feel the same way.

IMO...Anybody who's more concerned with what the BORDER of the preview window looks like, instead of what's going on WITHIN the preview window, either doesn't know what they're doing or has their priorities messed up.

Give me a simple, functioning interface that has options I can USE over a bunch of pointless "fluff" that I will only ever LOOK AT any day of the week.

SWF import/export with parameters as in Wildform Flix Pro 3. Especially the output color options: Color/Grayscale/Two colors

ROTOSCOPING

PAINT

TITLING with extrude, beveling, texture, "follow Bezier path" for text movement, vector tweaking, type on, random (definable) letters etc.

MASKs by drawing Bezier curves directly on preview window. Keyframeable of course.

PARTICLE GENERATOR/FILTERs such as rain, snow, fog, fire, fireworks, explosions and more.

MOTION TRACKER

MEDIA GENERATORS that are even more advanced. (Just recently sat down with the noise textures we already have. Man, you can do some amazing stuff with those.)

johnmeyer wrote on 10/18/2003, 11:46 PM
Much better titling, especially the user interface (Title Dekko is much closer to what is needed). Include 3D effects for titles

Cuts-only, lossless editing of MPEG source material.

Project "auditing" tool that will catch inadvertent "nudges" of controls like opacity and levels that can cause needless re-rendering of cuts-only clips.

Ability to read AC3 (i.e., put it directly onto the audio track).

Direct re-import and edit of VOBs from DVDs that I previously authored and burned.

Search for all instances of a particular fX (so I can quickly, globally change settings for one fX while leaving others intact).

Paste Event Attributes should replace existing attributes instead of adding to existing attributes.

Video noise reduction filters for analog (e.g., VHS tape) sources. These should include chroma, temporal, and spatial. These filters exist for VirtualDub, but cannot be used in Vegas with Satish's PluginPac because they operate over more than one frame.

Integration with motion stabilization software such as 2d3's Steadymove or Dynapel's Steadyhand (steadymove looks like it may be the better of the two, although I have only used Steadyhand). Premiere has this feature.

Advanced slow motion features. The motion estimation algorithms used for MPEG encoding can be used to predictively create intermediate frames. You should be able to create fantastic slow motion using these algorithms. Note that posts in your forums about slow motion are among the most frequent.

Smarter use of pre-rendered video. If I pre-render, when I do the final render, it appears as though none of the pre-renders are used.

Camera pre-roll when doing Print directly to tape (from within Vegas). Without this feature, I cannot do "frame accurate" insert to tape, whereas if I render and then print to tape from the capture utility, it uses the delay information to queue the start of the sequence at the exact moment that the tape starts rolling.

Ability to enter and exactly time text subtitles (probably a feature for DVDA).

Stop motion animation capture.

Ability to read and write line 21 VBI (vertical blanking interval) information (closed captions).

Ability to read, write, and display (through fX) the DV timecode (date and time) information.

Ability to read and write the DV second audio track.

Built-in bitrate calculator so you can render in Vegas (instead of in DVDA) and still have video fit one DVD (allowing, of course, for the space for a normal set of menus).
Jsnkc wrote on 10/18/2003, 11:58 PM
I think another thing that would be extremely valuable (if its possible) is the ability to pause a render and save and then be able to come back later and pick up where you left off. I know lots of times I'm in the middle of a long render and something comes up where I have to leave, and I don't really want to leave my computer on while I'm gone so I have to stop it and start all over again.
stormstereo wrote on 10/19/2003, 12:35 AM
Oh yes, easy subtitling in both Vegas and DVDA. I mean, easy creation and synchronizing of subtitles in Vegas and a choice of either display them when printing to tape and/or exporting some file to DVDA for use on DVD.

"MASKs by drawing Bezier curves directly on preview window. Keyframeable of course."

Yeah that would be great.

I would also like to see better titling (larger workspace as well).

3d capability in the event pan tool

Better media management please

A quick and easy auto white/black balance button. The one in Canopus works great and it's nice when you don't have much time.

Ditto that one.

1) auto black/white with feathering option to set a startpoint quick
existing black restore is not too good without featherin in there...
i use a chromakey to black at the moment when i need control over black restore and that is way overkill. ( especially for when i have a multicamera mix and one of the cameras is older and poor on black quality )

Here's my Top 10 wishlist:

1. Drag and drop regions into Media Bins to create automatic subclips
2. Scriptable titles
3. Sync / unsync toggle for audio and video from the same file (separate from "Group/Ungroup")
4. Allow selection of timeline Regions from Edit Details window (like in Sound Forge)
5. Fix bug that causes crash when trying to Shuffle Grouped events
6. Improve display to clearly identify grouped events
7. Allow true three-point editing with any combination of source in/out and timeline in/out poiints
8. Improve "snapping" behavior to allow for quickly butting clips together with no overlap or gaps
9. Add "Edit Original" feature to work on stills in photo editor (like Open in Sound Forge for audio files)
10. Let you specify different file destinations for each captured media clip in Video Capture; automatically recreate file structure when recapturing archived files.

I've posted most of these on the Product Suggestion webpage.

PAW wrote on 10/19/2003, 12:11 PM

Stuff I would like is........

Nested timelines, really like the idea for workflow

Better support for photoshop layers, manipulate each layer on a track with keyframes, on-off etc

right click on events has an option to open the media in the associated application as as a take

improve the plugin interface so apps like Boris can show the composite and pass event/transition information like length/aspect

fix the problem with external monitor preview on PAL 16:9 media where additional letterbox is added to recompressed frames.

And all of the above :-)

Have Fun, PAW
