Vegas 5 with Sound Forge 8?

I recently upgraded to SF8 from SF7. I use Vegas 5.0d, and I notice that it does not treat SF8 as "special," the way it did SF7. With SF7, if I had a longer audio clip that I trimmed on the timeline, and right-clicked on it, I could choose "Open in Sound Forge" and the whole audio clip would open in SF, but the trimmed portion would be selected and zoomed in to fill the screen automatically.

Now that I've switched to SF8, Vegas doesn't seem to recognize it as Sound Forge. My right click now is "Open in Audio Editor" and it does not automatically select the right part of the clip, it just opens the whole thing and I am stuck finding the portion of audio I want to work on.

Has this issue come up before on the forum? Is there something I can do to make Vegas 5 recognize SF8 as Sound Forge? I tried uninstalling SF7, so it's not there anymore, and even reinstalling Vegas, in case it went looking for SF upon install. Nothing seems to work. I'm pointing to the forge80.exe file, but Vegas doesn't seem to realize it's Sound Forge.

You need to point Vegas to Sound Forge.
Options>Prefs>Audio> Point to the exe file of Sound Forge 8

Thanks, DSE. I probably didn't phrase the question as well as I could have.

I have done what you suggested already, and although it makes Sound Forge the audio editor for Vegas, it treats Sound Forge 8 like "any third-party audio editor." In other words, it doesn't automatically jump to the selected portion of the audio file when it opens it from Vegas, which was a big help for me because I often find myself with larger audio files that I cut up quite a bit on the timeline and move around.

The fact that the pop-up menu now says "Open in Audio Editor" rather than "Open in Sound Forge" tips me off that Vegas 5 doesn't realize the new v8.0 is Sound Forge, it thinks it's any old audio editor. So I don't get the benefit of the Vegas/Sound Forge integration that I had with v7.0.

What I was wondering is if there's some tweak I can do to make Vegas recognize that v8.0 is, indeed, Sound Forge, and treat it as such.

Interesting... I'm also using Vegas 5 with SF8 and didn't even know it was SUPPOSED to take you right to the selected portion of the clip in SF8... that would be an awesome timesaver for me, though... waiting to hear what other folks suggest for making that happen!

Jeff - I asked the question of Sony Tech Support and received a reply that they were able to reproduce the problem and passed it along to the software engineers. Hopefully it is something easy to address, since now that they are on v6 of Vegas, there probably isn't that much incentive to fix v5.

By the way, I thought I might be able to fix it by fooling it and renaming "forge80.exe" back to "forge70.exe" and putting it in the old v7 folder, but that didn't work. Hopefully it's an easy fix, though.

I'll update this thread if/when I hear from Sony Tech Support. They've been extremely helpful to me in the past, so I expect I'll hear something back within the next couple of weeks, even if it is "we don't plan on fixing that."
