Vegas 6.0a - Windows Secondary Display CRASH Vegas!

Enlight wrote on 4/23/2005, 7:55 AM
Using Windows Secondary Display on External Monitor Preview (VEGAS 6 new feature) works great if you:

- don't change any setting in the projects settings

- don't try to preview files in the explorer / media manager

- don't try to switch on and off the "external monitor preview" button.

Anything else CRASHES Vegas 6.0a!

Is there a workaround for this?, it's a bug?, it's configuration compatibility problem?

Does anyone have the same problem?

I'm using: Windows XP SP2, Vegas 6.0a Trial, Windows Secondary Display, using NVIDIA GeForce 6800.

Thanks!

All of the above seems to work fine for me except previewing files from the explorer which is laggy but it doesn't crash vegas.

Nat,

You on SP1 or 2?

Mmmm, whats your configuration?

I already tryied to use different display settings, like 640x480, 720x480, 1024x768 in the TV output, but it doesn't solve anything.

I cannot find the problem!, everythings looks fine, I can edit with no problems, but vegas freezes when switching external preview on/off.

Could be something related to .NET Framework? I have version 1.1 SP1 with hotfix from microsoft (Hotfix KB886903). I don't know...

On mine it doesn't CRASH, but the main part of the screen goes black if I click on ANYTHING. There is a small band at the bottom (where the START button is) that is visible. If I click there Vegas comes back. But, when I click on anything (other than that band), it goes black, again. I have to use Task Master to kill Vegas because I can't click on exit, or anything else, for that matter. Interesting.

I'm guessing Video card or memory. My system runs fine AS LONG AS I don't change settings or experiment. If I just set it up, hit the preview button...view and dis-engage the preview button I am good. But if I switch settings, move the window around, re-size.....I lose screen re-draw on the monitor. I go back to the basic windows background (teal green)...not what I have set. If I open a window, it takes forever....if I drag that window it "erases" the plain background and draws my "true" background wherever the window goes. I have an ATI 9250. It seems I "overload" it in some fashion. Re-boot...all is back to normal. Not a very good card and only 128mb. I'm guessing something with it????

Good luck.

I don't think there is a problem with hardware. I think there is a problem of compatibility with Vegas 6 AND my current hardware.

I'm using 1 GB RAM, Athlon64 939, Gigabyte K8NSNXP-939, NVIDIA GeForce6800 (128mb), Windows XPSP2 (fresh install).

Everything in the system work perfectly. I think Sony Vegas Team should take a look a the "Secondary Display" plug-in code. For what I have read, the implementation is still buggy. There is no reason for this plug-in to work this way, there are no hardware limitations of any kind.

They should fix this in the 6.0b.

Hey Sony! read this thread!!

BTW: I'm still looking for a 'work-around'. This is a very useful feature I was waiting for a long time!

XP2 here with latest NVIDIA drivers for my TI4800, dual 1600*1200 screens previewing at 1600*1200 on the second screen, no problems.

So, it looks like the problem is the combination NVIDIA GeForce 6800 - Vegas 6.

This is an idea from deep left field, but there is a known WMV decoding bug in the 6x00 series of nVidia cards. I'm adding this in the offhand chance that it may have anything to do with the problem you're seeing.

I've got an older Ti4200 here with two LCD's -- I'll try to repro your issue...

edit: nope -- sorry, no problems here.

I have the same issue when i use Vegas 6 with two display. When I click anywhere on the main display it goes blank but the secondary display is still on with the other half of Vegas displayed. I have an ATI Radeon 9600XT card and use Hydravison to enable dual displays. It looks like Vegas could have some issues with Hydravision software. Vegas 5, Premiere1.5 and Liquid 6 work without a glitch.

I’m using the Windows Secondary Display for preview with Vegas 6.0a and an ATI Radeon 9800Pro 128MB without any problems. Occasionally, it will not redraw the Windows desktop when existing Vegas 6 but selecting Refresh on the desktop fixes it.

Mine is an ATI FireGL 5100, with latest driver, in case anyone at Sony is taking notes on what drivers and cards crash. Below is my original post.

I have GeForce 5300 (PCI) and everything works except if I click on preview, as to select a color sample, then that screen gets the hour glass. I need move over to the previuew screen in the Vegas work area.
