Vegas 6.0d runs slowly

Didn't have a chance to do much editing this past school year, but now that its summer I've been jumping back into things, but have been having some problems. Vegas is running slowly for me. It will be playing the timeline when all of a sudden the preview stops and it just sits there (the scrubber is still going across the timeline and the music still plays, but the picture stops). I see the little dots appearing next to the frame number saying its trying to render the frame...but its just a jpeg, with no effects added to it. And after I hit stop, it still tries to render that frame for like 2 more minutes before it finally snaps out of it and begins working again.

I'm working on a Pentium 4 2.67gHz processor with 512mb of RAM and a 128mb nVidia graphics card. Not the most powerful machine, I know, but I'm a student and its all I can afford. Besides, I've never used to have this problem.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

So get this...it only happens with pictures. I have some video in the beginning of the project and it plays the video just fine, but once it gets to the slideshow (just a bunch of pictures with transitions in between), it slows down HORRIBLY. It is impossible for me to edit because it can hardly get through two pictures without locking up. I'm really desperate for some help here as I'm on a time crunch.

ANY suggestions would be welcome. I've quit every running program on my computer (including antivirus and Palm Desktop - everything) and I'm still having problems.

Thanks!

It depends a lot on the size of the picture files. If these are extremely large, it will slow down the program.

Well...they're all only like 500kb if that...so if that's extremely large...yikes.

What's the location of your Temp folders?
If it's still set to C:\My Documents, and your hard drive is filling up, that might have somethng to do with it.

Naw, I have two hard drives and they're both well over 20 gigs free.

I have two hard drives ...

OK. When was the last time you took the cover off your computer and blew the dust out of it?

It actually wasn't too long ago...I mean I wouldn't eat off of anything in there, but there aren't any colonies or anything.

One last guess, with that small amount of Memory, what other programs are you running while running Vegas?

I've quit everything on my machine. The only thing running is Vegas. I've even closed down virus scanner and photo software and everything.

It seems that after I just work on it for 30 minutes or so, it starts working a lot better, but if I leave the computer for really any amount of time, it slows down a lot. So basically, if I work without stopping, it works fine....but I get thirsty...
