Vegas 6 HD Capture Not As Good as Cineform HD

Gordont wrote on 5/31/2005, 7:36 PM
When I have used Cineform HD Connect (trial version) to capture HD video from a JVC HD10, it would seamlessly capture video, one scene after another, logging each scene as a seperate file name with a sequential number.
Vegas 6, which I understand using some Cineform technology, crashes and the program closes down when a scene change is reached. It captures fine as long as I manually start and stop a capture before a scene change. But as soon as a scene change occurs, the program crashes. I am using Vegas 6.0b Build 115.
This is a bad bug. No response from SONY email support on this problem!!
Do I have to buy Cineform HD connect and spend another $150? I was really looking forward to the integrated capture in Vegas 6. Any ideas? Thanks.

On the same topic, Vegas' built in HDV capture causes my system to become very slow and stuttery. For example my mouse moves in a jerky hard to control manner. Does anyone know how or where I disable HDV preview during capture? I think Vegas is choking while trying to show me what is coming in.

What's your PC? A 300 MHz PIII or a liquid-cooled Dual CPU Dual-Core Opteron?

This can be a performance issue, probably CPU but possibly also other bottlenecks.

I have a P4 2.8, 800 Mhz bus, gig of Corsair ram, ATI 9700 Pro, MSI 875p Neo Motherboard, TI OHCI Firewire card. I know a 2.8 gig P4 is the min. which puts me in a bad place. I really need an upgrade, but am currently poor. I am currently testing capture w/ Connect HD to see if things improve. So far they seem better.

Thanks for replying. But, to my original question, does your Vegas crash when you try to capture HD across scenes?? My software does not know how to handle the end of a scene and the beginning of another. Do your systems capture multiple scenes correctly??

Concerning the mouse, jerky problem. I had that problem using a HP Computer 1 gig Athlon working with digital photos when I would print them to a color laser printer. Things would get jerky as the image was downloading to the printer. Things improved when I stopped using the provided HP mouse and switched to a regular Microsoft optical mouse using the intellimouse software drivers for the mouse. It got better but not perfect. I think some of the issue is CPU speed related.

Gordont, sorry for not answering the original question. Vegas does not crash, but playback does stop sometimes between scene changes causing me to have to hit play again.

I think my stuttery mouse might be due to the fact that I am using a Razer Diamondback gaming mouse, which has software running in the background. I will try another mouse. Thanks for bringing up your past mouse issues.

I also went back to capturing w/ Connect HD. So far it seems to be less painful than using Vegas, at least until I can afford a more powerful system.

My experience with the Sony version is not that scene changes necesarily give it problems, but some other factor - my guess is a break in the time code. Although I can't rule out hickups in transferring data to the hardrives.

I've gone back to using the Cineform capture module - the scene detection is very handy.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. I just did somemore testing with the Vegas capture and I get the same crash on scene changes whether I am capturing from the camera (jvc hd10) or the matching hd deck (cu-vh1).
I just did a test with cineform 1.7, 15 day trial version and had no problems at all. Captures across scenes perfectly! I too, will have to use cineform. I did notice on the cineform website that the price is $199 for everyone. About a month ago if you were a registered Vegas user you were able to buy it at a discount, I think $149. I guess after the release of Vegas 6, with intergrated HD capture support, cineform stopped the discount?
