Vegas 6 - import standard DVD?

I have a short film to score and have been given it on what looks like a standard DVD without any sync or timecode.

Is there anyway that Vegas 6 can import a standard DVD so that i can sort of line up the DVD with my music (i know there's no timecode or frames, )

Just a general start/stop of the DVD with the music would help, can this be done?

I try to import the DVD but it says i need the Sony MPEG plug in, but have since been told that the MPEG won't really help with a DVD?

Did you use File / Import / DVD Camcorder Disc?

Worst case scenario for editing only...
play the DVD onto a TV screen and shoot it with your camera.

Then digitize and cut audio to that (crummy) picture.

Chances are excellent that the audio will hold good sync, so you can then save the audio track as an AC3 and simply replace the existing audio track on the original DVD. Or, of course (better) send the synced music track back to the original DVD editing guy.

The shooting a TV screen idea is funny! ;-)

Put the disc in your drive and find out what format the files are using Windows Explorer. If it's a standard DVD structure it'll be VTS and VOB files. The VOBs are, in simple terms, MPEG-2 video with a multiplex of audio and video.

If you use a free tool such as DVD Decrypter then you can just "rip" those files off the disc to standard .MPG files. A registered version of Vegas will then import them and you can add them to the timeline etc.

If you don't have a registered version you'll have to use another tool to convert the MPEG files to AVI.
