My understanding is that Vegas uses the MS SQL Desktop Engine (not the same thing as the old SQL Desktop Edition!), which is related to the MSDE (MS Data Engine).

If this Desktop Engine isn't so robust, this would explain a lot of what has been observed with the MM in V6.

The Desktop Engine creates "Access Projects" (MS terminology) that can supposedly be easily upgraded to use of a "real" SQL server database.

The Media Manager leverages the predecessor to SQL Server 2005 Express, the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine, not the MS Access/Jet database libraries. At this point we don't support moving the database service to a separate PC (it isn't quite as simple as changing a connection string), but there has been some interest in that and we are evaluating it.

You can install any variant of SQL Server 2005, but we don't use it yet (it has only been officially released for a few weeks). We don't prevent you from using SQL Server 2005 on the same PC for other work however.
