Vegas 8 Lip Sync errors

Dave Stalker wrote on 3/15/2010, 10:23 AM
When rendering our broadcast commercials with h264/mpeg4 codec we often get lip sync errors in the final on air broadcast. cannot see any error on our end, but when it goes on the air, it's off.

There is a known bug in Vegas 8 that causes this, sliding the audio on the track is not a consistently successful solution.

Could it be related to the position of the audio tracks on the timeline?

Really stumped on this, and don't have Vegas 9 yet.

It doesn't happen when you play the file locally? What about when you try a different render format (can the playback system run mpeg-2?)?

I don't think so. Master Control is real picky about what we send them.

Thanks for the idea.

I'd ask Master Control if I had any other options.
h264/mpeg4 is a rather strange codec for a broadcast place.

We tried all the settings, and that's what worked best initially. But ultimately, Sony copped to there being an issue w/ Vegas 8, that was causing the problem intermittently.

I am wondering if placement of audio tracks top to bottom in 18 tracks has any impact on rendering problems. Does Vegas look from the bottom track up thru the top track for each frame it renders? Or does it render video first then audio?

All help appreciated.

Use a 3rd party encoder to figure out if it's Vegas or the mp4. Render out an uncompressed file & encode it to your specs, render one out in Vegas with the same specs. See if both glitch.

I have Vegas 9c and have experienced lipsync drifting in and out on the standard mp4 codec (the name escapes me, but its the same one as mp2).

I have had great success with the new "Sony" mp4 codec, also provided in the package for HD projects.

Sadly the names of all these codecs are escaping me right now - I will try to log back in tonight to provide them.

I am not sure if the Sony one was available in Vegas 8, but its as reliable as good ol Mpg2.

Cheers,
Jason

Main Concept MP4 is the older codec that I have lipsync drift issues with in 9.0c.

Sony AVC MP4 encoder is the one I now use and it is rock solid.

I am not sure if Sony AVC will be available to you in 8 - I think it is.

Cheers,
Jason
