vegas 8--preview on external monitor

why is it then when i hit the preview on external monitor icon, my whole computer screen becomes filled with the video/canvas window?

Options / Preferences - choose Device and select OHCI Compliant - you're sending your preview to an external monitor - because I'm assuming you only have one monitor, Vegas is sending the preview to that monitor.

Because that's how you set it up. You chose Windows Secondary display as your preview device so the preview is going full screen on whatever screen you designated for it.
