Vegas 9 Platinim keeps crashing

My friend told me Vegas 9 Platinum was amazing so I go out and buy it. I have an 8 core, 10 gig machine. 2 Xeon 2.80 processors so it's plenty powerful enough.

I have a Canon HF10 that records to the hard drive. I had used this with other video software without fail.

I plug in the camera to my computer, import the video with Vegas and it works fine. I go through the steps to make my video, adding titles etc, I choose to render as and I make a new profile that exports at 1920x1080 rather then the 1440x1080 profile Sony defaults as the highest (not even true HD, not sure why they wouldn't have a 1920x1080 profile, but that's a diff topic)

I do this and I click save as .wmv, I don't change any of the other settings other than size.

2 seconds into rendering, it crashes.

I upgraded to the newer version 9.0b and it did it again and again so I uninstalled and went back to 9.0a

So now I have this piece of software I paid $109 for that is basically useless to me. What the heck? The first time, t told me I don't have enough ram. ummm... no... I have 10 gigs, running Vista 64 bit without issue. Plenty of ram.

I tried the default rendering options as well, 1440 x 1080, 720 x 540... you name it... crash, crash, crash. Honestly confused as to why this happens right out of the box. I also tried different versions to save as, .avi, .mp4 etc. All same effect, crash crash crash.

I had read to change how many threads are active in properties. I moved it from 4 to 1, restart program... try again... crash. sigh. I change it to 8 since I have 8 cores... restart program... start again... crash crash crash.

Darn program doesn't work and I can't get my money back, even though I bought it YESTERDAY. Starting to feel like Sony screwed me here.

Anyone have any ideas how I can get this to work?

Ask for your money back and buy another video app.

I slept at 5 AM last night because of Vegas too (and that included its Pro versions as well).
WMV HD export: crash at 51%
DVD NTSC: crash at 96%
DVD PAL: crash at 19%
DVD NTSC again: crash at 59%

I had to recreate the project and use Vegas Pro 9 and be able to finish the exports for a friend's wedding -- at 5 AM. And even Pro 9 was close to crash too (it seemed like a memory leak, the exporting became unnaturally slow after 56%).

Long story short, if it crashes and nothing works, ask for your money back, and try another app, e.g. Premiere Elements 7. This doesn't mean that the other apps don't crash btw. They ALL crash. Video editing/encoding is a complex process, so more often than not, you will get crashes, especially on larger projects.

BTW, if your crashes happen with the Sony AVC encoder, this is a known bug that Sony hasn't fixed (and they should have). The forums are full of this report.

One thing to try before you give up: create a new project with the right project properties, and then copy/paste one timeline to another. Usually this fixes project format corruption and it might help you with exporting without crashing.

Add me to the crashing MSVCR80 dll problem. Just bought Vegas 9 and installed it on my Windows 7 machine. It registered fine and installed the latest update but when I try to load any HD file to edit, it crashes with an error that Vegas movie Studio Platinum has stopped working, with MSVCR80.dll being the module in fault. Multiple uninstalls and reinstalls doesn't help. Anybody figure out how to fix this?
