You do understand that you are paying for a professional version of Vegas? For upgrading professional quality software, this price is actually quite low when compared to every other competitor!

If you're looking for consumer level prices, you should be buying Vegas Movie Studio 9. I'm sure the Platinum version has everything you need at a price that is more comfortable.

then put in your vegas Pro 8 software serial and get a 50 discount and a free peice of software or sound FX.

Upgrades are never cheap and this is on par with standard upgrades. Wasn't that long ago that I upgraded Photoshop, $349. Not going to pretend that it doesnt hurt to pay it but I do think getting all huffy and throwing around completely unfounded accusations at Sony is kinda silly. Beyond that I feel the need to remind you that you don't have to upgrade! The Vegas 8 you bought only last year will keep working for a long long time. =)

Let the man rant, nothing wrong with expressing your feelings over costs.

Say the upgrade cost was $500, would more people complain? Probably so. Everyone has their price limits, and what Sony is charging now is what he considers too high.

Of course he knows he doesn't HAVE to upgrade, but it sounds like he wants to but it's just over his spending limit. If nobody complained and paid whatever price what was charged then prices would go up. Price and demand. (and not just Sony, all companies charge what they can get away with for the most profit.)

I'm glad to see they've increased the cost of upgrades.
If the extra money goes to fund development then this is a good thing.
Considering that I still run V4 on an old laptop, V6 and V7 on another machine and V8 on two machines Vegas is quite a bargain, not that I've ever felt any upgrade for any software was overpriced.

I have no problem with Sony at all when it comes to upgrades. Very fair pricing and usually a nice incentive to upgrade is offered as well. There is a lot of development going on at SCS and as Bob states you have to fund development. I am sure the developers like to have a raise in their paychecks as well.

Bob, Thanks for your post. I feel better because I was starting to think I was the only insane one here...

Seriously though, dibbkd- thank you for your clear-thinking response. You nailed it.

So I guess you guys will be lowering your costs on the work you deliver. Times being tough and all.
DukeC wrote on 5/11/2009, 5:19 PM
Nope, but I wont be raising my prices either.

My only point was that it's OK for someone to say that something costs too much. Of course if it is, they don't upgrade, voting with their lack-of-purchase.

As far as me raising my rates, I use Vegas Pro for home videos and a few VERY minor things on the side, so for my rates, maybe I'll have my wife make me dessert for the next video I make for the family.

And yes, I have upgraded to V9, loving it for the few hours I've had it.

upgrade price hasn't gone up, it's the same it always was. Last month that was the Vegas 8 upgrade price. Now you get a discount as an early adopter, but besides that discount it hasn't changed.

==========
Clarification: $149 has been the download upgrade price for every version that I remember. Last month I paid $149 when I upgraded to Vegas Pro 8 when they had the special.

This one is a little more. Not that it is unreasonable mind you, but it is slightly more.

You sure? When the V9 preorder came out V8 was listed on the right for the exact same price.
dibbkd wrote on 5/11/2009, 8:04 PM
Yes, the upgrade to V7 and V8 were both $149.00.

Vegas Pro 8 cost me $134.95 for the download. I bought it on 9/10/2007.

Upgrade to Vegas 6+DVD regular US $249.95 with limited time special of $199.95

I always buy during the promo period.
TheHappyFriar wrote on 5/11/2009, 8:21 PM
but within the promotional period, right? That's the only time I ever upgrade because of the price savings @ that time. If it was $150 all year round I'd wait & see how others like it first.
bStro wrote on 5/11/2009, 8:31 PM
TheHappyFriar is right.

The $150 / $135 price was only for the first 30 days of release. After that, the price has always been approximately $250 for packaged, $235 for download. The difference is that 1) the "early bird special" this time is $50 and free software instead of $100 and 2) it lasts for about 60 days instead of 30.

FWIW upgrades for folks with SoFo software averaged about $100 for the 1st month only... With Sony it depended on your mailing list lately -- I got emails both for $137 & I think $250 for Vegas 7&8. Then at the first of this year they offered a straight discount across the board on anything. I'd guess as many old timers who've bought 9 already they probably don't want to throw open the doors on the $150 or lower upgrade for the risk of getting early buyers p/o'd, though I'll keep my fingers crossed till the last minute.

Now years ago (decades really) Adobe OWNED anything related to graphics & printing industries, & pros were enthusiastic about the high price for keeping out the riff raff. Well, they lost that dominance in pretty much everything, as everybody including DIY printers jumped in & pre press shops & printers went under wholesale. Nowdays I'm semi amused whenever I see pros comment like in this thread that software should cost more.

In these times, pro or not it's a challenge, and I imagine Sony has quite a few customers used to the deflation pricing you could and can find so far this year. Add in there's more video apps out there, more & cheaper cameras, not to mention all categories of hardware, and in the *overall* marketplace I'd be surprised if Sony hasn't felt it. Then you have win7 stirring things up, cutting into budgets with hard & software demands. Frankly I'm looking at the current pricing as somewhat of a gamble, & I'm not surprised to see grumbling.

As long as the upgrades and perceived updates along the life of the product deserve it I'd pay 2 times what this upgrade pricing is. I make a living with Vegas, and my knowledge of Audio, Video, Sales, Marketing, and general ability to keep customers happy (whether they're my own, or the ones of the people I contract to).

I admit, it's been a tough year, and Paying out all those taxes following the birth of my first son just a little over 6 months ago, and my wife being fired for not coming back to work when FMLA ran out with a 2-3 week old makes it a bit harder, but I'm inclined to buy the upgrade for the enhanced workflow, improved codec/format support, and improved rendering performance (depending on your formats).

Heck, I can edit RAW R3D files - I'm betting I'm one of the few houses in town that can say that right now ( not a lot of Vegas folks around here to the best of my knowledge ).

TheHappyFriar is right.

Actually what he said was: "upgrade price hasn't gone up, it's the same it always was."

Since this is the initial 30 days of the release if we are comparing apples to apples he is not correct. It is slightly higher in that it is not $149 ($150) this time for the initial release upgrade.

Again, I am not saying that it is unreasonable; but it is higher (for the initial upgrade) than what it was in the past.

Point: Accuracy - that's all.
