Vegas 9b updated crashes my software, inoperable

I started up Vegas 9 last night to be informed of the available update. I confirmed the download and installed it. After rebooting and starting Vegas 9.0b, Vegas stopped responding. It then crashed. I started it again, it got to the startup splash screen, stopped responding and then crashed. I started it again, it go through the splash screen and loaded.

I tried to open my current project, but after selecting it, the software stopped responding and then crashed again.

In short, each time I have started Vegas 9b it gets a little further along but then eventually crashes.

I would simply like to roll-back the update, but trying to find Vegas 9 without the patch applied is not possible. Unfortunately I purchased only the download version and have no CD. I submitted a support request and have heard from no one. I tried Live Assistance but am simply stuck in a queue in the first position. I do not get connected with anyone.

This is very frustrating as Vegas 9 was working with no problems for me before the patch as applied and I am working on a deadline (or, at least, my son is: he's using the software for a science project).

I still have the download of 9.0 and 9.0a - would it help if I emailed them to you? You'd have to put in your serial number for them to work. My only question is "Is what I'm suggesting legal?". Don't want to break any copyright laws here.

Thank you, Gerry. This is the only response I have received thus far since reporting this last night. I would not want you to get into any trouble, and I think the files are too large for me to receive them by email.

Hopefully someone from Sony will see my request and that I am only wanting to roll back my update.

The files are about 85 and 110 Mb (9 and 9a). I'd appreciate if if anyone here could comment on the legality of this. I'm not emailing them my serial number - just the downloaded program.

Remove completely your Vegas installation, install the 9.0b version again, and enter your serial number.

I have done as you suggested and even removed all traces of the directories and cleaned the registry.

I installed 9.0b build 66 and was successful in running the application one time. I thought the problem was solved.

After running it a second time, I removed a media clip from my project. Then I attempted to import a video clip. The program crashed again, and I the only indication I have of what the problem might be is that the audio track had the message "building peaks" rather than the actual audio track when it crashed.

Now we are back to the same problem of when the application starts, it does not respond (freezes) for several seconds. Then the splash screen will pop up. then the program again freezes for several seconds. But after that, any other action within the program simply causes it to crash.

I cannot express enough how vital it is to get this application to the working state it was in before I applied the update. I just wish Sony would get back in touch with me and give me version prior to 9.0b build 66.

Are your media on an external removable drive?

Also, I am sure that the problem is created by another app or driver installed on your system. If you can't solve the problem, I would suggest re-installing Windows.

Erik from Sony Customer Service was able to direct me to 9.0a and once I installed the mcplug changes, Vegas worked as it did before. I have no idea what the problem was but I won't be updating to 9.0b. I have decided to keep the 9.0a installer and the mcplug.zip so that if future updates cause problems, I can at least roll them back.

Thank you to everyone who provided input.

Another way to rool back would be through the Windows Restore function.

My machine is set to create a System Restore Point once a day - and before I install or update ANYTHING AT ALL i just use the few seconds it takes to create a extra Restore Point.

It has saved a lot of really bad words - last time yesterday as an innocent looking update to Windows own Virtual Earth made the machine work extremely slowly.
