Vegas 9e keeps crashing

GregO wrote on 5/21/2010, 6:03 AM
Upgraded to 9e 64 bit last week and have Loved how much faster it is for editing and rendering.

It's not as stable though for me for some reason. Likes to crash while I'm editing several times a day. Yesterday it was every half hour.

Of course I'm editing that dreaded AVCHD format...

As soon as I even crossfade ANY video... It's too much for the preview monitor to handle in realtime and I get maybe 5 frames a second preview quality.

I barely get a project loaded with 9e and it crashes. 9d didn't work very well either, so now I'm editing with 9c. I think that is your best bet right now. 9c has been the stablest version of 9 so far for me.

Have you reported the problem to SCS?
GregO wrote on 5/21/2010, 1:44 PM
I did contact them and really got no answer why this version is crashing... instead... the blame is being shifted to other possibile slow downs... but not the crash of this version.

This was their response:

Hi Greg,

Thank you for contacting Sony Creative Software.

If you are working with AVCHD footage and the software is continually crashing, I would suggest that you try converting the footage to an intermediate format. Here is some information on that:

http://www.custcenter.com/cgi-bin/sonypictures.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2753

Since this is not always the most ideal workflow, I would encourage you to read through the following forum post dealing with low memory errors and related crashes.

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=671862

This article has helped a number of users that have had low memory error messages due to memory caps in Windows. This solution is more technical in nature and I would encourage you to read through the entire thread first, and if you do not feel comfortable performing the changes to the files that are listed, that you contact a computer tech that can help with these settings. The changes in this article are outside of our realm of support, so if you choose to make these modifications we cannot assist you with them. However, you can post in this forum with any questions that you have and other users can lend you their suggestions on the issue.

If you still have a follow-up question on this particular incident, please feel free to update it. If you have a completely different question, please create a new incident.

Yes...Vegas 9e is starting to crash and stall on my system. They may need one more update. The last 2 weeks it was working fine.

I will create a incident.

Any update on this incident?

Several of my machines, crash very often with AVCHD editing. I can't seem to determine why it effects only certain machines a lot, and under what conditions does it crash.

Our setup is based very heavily around the Panasonic HMC150, which shoots in AVCHD (AVCCAM, in Panasonic's language).

Here too , terrible thing , version 9e.
Have subscribed for an avid course and that after so many years of sony make believe since have to finish projects in time and than crashes ( sometimes not , then each 20 minutes , even when doing nothing at all ) drive one insane .

Am using m2t files from my HVR-V1 cameras that came with vegas 7 ( as solid as rock ) .

Example :

( after efffects for titlings whilst vegas pro 9 for simple things )

Sony  PXW-FX9 and 2 x Sony PXW-Z280  ( optimised as per Doug Jensen Master Classes and Alister Chapman advices ) Sony A7 IV
2 x HP Z840 workstations , each as follows : WIN10 pro x 64 , 2 x 10 core Xeon E5-2687W V3 at 3.5 GHz , 256 GB reg ECC RAM , HP nvidia quadro RTX A5000 ( 24GB ), 3 x samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0 x4  , 3 x SSD 1TB samsung 860 pro , 3 x 3TB WD3003FZEX.
SONY Vegas Pro 13 build 453  ( user since version 4 ) , SONY DVDarch , SONY SoundForge(s) , SONY Acid Pro(s) , SONY Cinescore ( each year buying upgrades for all of them since vegas pro 4 )
(MAGIX) Vegas pro 14 ( bought it as a kind of support but never installed it )
SONY CATALYST browse
Adobe Photoshop  CC 2025
Adobe After Effects CC 2025 & Adobe Media Encoder CC 2025
Avid Media Composer 2024.xx ( started with the FREE Avid Media Composer First in 2019 )
Dedicated solely editing systems , fully optimized , windows 10 pro x 64
( win10 pro operating systems , all most silly garbage and kid's stuff of microsoft entirely removed , never update win 10 unless required for editing purposes or ( maybe ) after a while when updates have proven to be reliable and no needless microsoft kid's stuff is added in the updates )

I too have recent crashes with vegas 9e. Turning off the external monitor stops the crashes but this is a terrible work around. Maybe this solution can help others.

Huh..I'm doing editing of AVCHD from a HMC150 on a Windows 7 64 bit machine, quad core, 6 GBs RAM, external eSATA drive, external USB drive, two internal drives, Vegas 9e. No problems whatsoever. I have both edited extensively with AVCHD, also converted to AVI with no problems, other than LARGE files. Maybe this is related to the machine configuration? I had some blue screens of death for a while when transferring off the SD card directly to an external USB hard drive. I stopped doing that, and simply dump to an internal eSata, and then migrate that to an external eSata.

But no, I've not experienced any problems (knock on plastic) since then, which has been months. BUT I don't know if I'm doing as complex a set of projects as some of you. My needs are relatively simple. Are you guys running Windows 7 64 bit with Vegas 9.0e 64 bit? I had crashes when inadvertantly downloading the 32 bit version and ran it on W7 64. This is easier to do than you would think. When I reloaded the 64 bit version my problems went away. Now if I can just get a 100 MB pipe into my house!

Wolf, just watched your dance video, this is pretty much as straightforward as my stuff. You shouldn't be crashing like this with Vegas 9e on W7. I'm not. doing anything fancy here..take a look...

an interesting comparison is later in the same concert edited with FCP...just for kicks..
I could not get the blacks contrast to be as good with Vegas as with FCP. It just didn't hold up as well, no matter how hard I tried. Put them side by side on separate browser windows and you will see that the FCP contrast was a bit crisper, and the blacks rendered better. Not sure why I couldn't match that on Vegas, but I'm no expert.

You guys need to look up some earlier posts because you should not be having these problems with VP 9.0e !

When 9.0d first came out there was quite the uproar about choppy playback and crashes, etc. Almost all the problems SCS could fix they did in ver 9.0e, which came out a few bare weeks after ver 9.0d. The solutions for your problems are probably there in earlier posts already hashed out.

You especially shouldn't be having problems with m2t files. Those are HDV files (from that camera the HVR -V1), and I run them very often as I have a Sony HVR-Z1U camera myself. I have several partners and clients with an array of AVCHD cameras that I run clips from on my timeline both alone for their projects and mixed with HDV, AVI, etc., with no problems.

One thing to note, I do have a 20 minute time limit on how long the clips and project can total up to on the timeline, then Vegas starts to hiccup, so I do nesting with veg files. It's actually kind of convenient. Keeps sections of the project separated so one mistake doesn't foul up the whole project, just that section. There are other "advantages" to this "limitation".

Anyway, there are far more users having very good experiences with VP 9.0e than those that aren't, and almost all the problems encountered have fixes available to all users. I think SCS's response was right on the money. Try out what they suggested. Don't just jump ship.

Vegas is a great NLE, and it has it's place in the pantheon of video software.
