Vegas 9e Pro - 3D Alpha Bug?

digifish wrote on 8/24/2010, 3:36 AM
Greetings I made this video recently...

Keep an eye on the background pictures (far distance @ around 48 seconds)

It was my first time to use the 3D alpha composition feature. I notice that some of the video track elements dissapear at certain viewing angles even tho they are not obscured by anything.

Does this look like a bug?... or a noob mistake :)

digifish, nicely done video. I see what you are talking about but it is difficult for me to speculate what is going on to cause that. To trouble shoot it, I recommend you solo the track that has the disappearing image. If it works then, just add the other tracks one at a time until you find what is causing the problem.

digifish, I just saw a post on creativecow that may be a similar problem to yours. You might want to keep an eye on their post.

I know this is elementary, but did you check to ensure you have your events extended out past the point on the timeline at which they disappear? I had a similar issue with a project I did and tracked it back to that. Frustrating considering the time it takes to render projects like these.

Thanks TeaTime & Jrazz...

I just went through the project and soloed only the tracks that are disappearing. So in this project there is no other track other than the elements and the parent 3d alpha track and a couple of labels left to show where the images were (and the music). All checked muted so they are not the cause.

The 3D parent track BTW is empty and being used only for 3D parent motion control.

Here's the result...It only happens in that one section.

BTW: While making this project I did discover some other bugs such as.

1. Changing the frame size of generated text object size doesn't update correctly until you reload the project.

2. ...and something else I forget now :)

So where is the official place to report bugs? I am a little peeved with SONY ATM, I was forced to upgrade from Vegas 8 Pro to 9 in order to get it working properly on Windows 7, 64 Bit (which 8 kept crashing all the time) and now more bugs.

As you can see I work for Image-Line, a music production software company, so I understand the issue of bugs and fixing them. However it sucks to have to keep paying to upgrade Vegas to get bug-fixes :(

We give Lifetime free updates to FL Studio for that very reason (which ironically this video is about). Customers shouldn't have to pay to get bugs fixed.

I noticed that each element disappears in a sequence. It looks like a wipe is wiping the elements off. Like a clock wipe.

Weird

Can you post your veg file? Before you do, can you label the tracks that are giving you trouble? This way one of us can take a look at it, plug our own pics in those tracks and see if we see anything.

Sure, I have labelled the problem tracks "Trouble 1...5"

Dijifish I had some similar issues what I recall the work around was

I had several 3d tracks sitting in a main 3d container on the top last 3d track add a new alpha track on the top of all the tracks sitting in the main 3d container track. Only do this for the first top 3d track

That is =

3d main container track parent

3d track 1
New Alpha track [ empty track ]
Elements in 3d track

3d track 2
Elements in 3d track

3d track 3 etc

I started by having a look at Trouble 5 and couldn't find it doing anything wrong. I did find that both the image and text on tracks 86 and 87 were doing something wrong. It looks like they're moving behind another object and hence being occluded but darned if I can find the object and they still do it even when the tracks are soloed.

Your project has 114 tracks, trying to find my way around it to debug it was no fun. I do take my hat off to you for the work that must have taken. I found the black plinth you have under the main title at the bottom of the frame a bit of a visual worry as objects pass behind it, maybe make it more transparent or else use more optical correct depth cues (DOF?) to setup the 3D space.

Thanks farss & Rory Cooper for the suggestions.

farss> "I started by having a look at Trouble 5 and couldn't find it doing anything wrong...but darned if I can find the object and they still do it even when the tracks are soloed."

The soloing was what convinced me this is some sort of bug.

farss>"Your project has 114 tracks, trying to find my way around it to debug it was no fun. I do take my hat off to you for the work that must have taken."

It was about 3 days from start to end I think.

"use more optical correct depth cues (DOF?) to setup the 3D space."

I am aware that I could have used DOF, brightness and motion blur effects to make this all more realistic, but it was my first 3D attempt and I had a deadline. Does Vegas give you the ability to apply or modulate effects based Z depth? That would be handy.

So where and how do you report bugs around here?

" Does Vegas give you the ability to apply or modulate effects based Z depth? "

No, Vegas doesn't have a 'real' camera that lets you set focal length and aperature etc. Cheapest answer if you want that is After Effects.

OK thanks. To add this to Vegas it would seem that they need to extend automation the ability to link to other internal parameters. So you select Z (for example) as a source to feed destination target parameters.

...and some sort of linking system to normalize inputs (that is -1 to +1) range that can be mapped onto to the target.

Found the thread that I posted way back with the problem, the wobble I mentioned is the text and images would appear and disappear http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=692063

Thanks for the link.

So is THIS forum the bug reporting process?
