VEGAS and 3D space (composite) - Some things I wanted to talk about

GlitchyPSI wrote on 8/2/2018, 5:24 PM

I've been using VEGAS (in a somewhat serious way) since Sony Vegas 10, and I must say that one thing I totally love doing is creating 3D spaces using composites with 3D Source Alpha 🙂

However as of lately (and using V14 now) I've been wondering why not much has been made with 3D space stuff in VEGAS. While editing I've had to create an Additive composite track for certain tiny effects I wanted to add to a video and I felt somewhat bummed about having to sacrifice a big part of the 3D space features given to me by the 3D Source Alpha composite (hello clipping!). I wondered a lot ever since... would it be too much to ask for extra 3D composite modes or 3D space features overall? 🤔
(totally not gonna mention the axes' limit ahaha)
Yeah this is some request masked as something I don't even know the name of, but I'd like to hear your opinions on the matter 👀

+: I'm the type of guy that has always wanted to do stuff like importing
3 D M O D E L S (hello, Wavefront OBJ / COLLADA... yeah I know I'm going very far) in the timeline and do some stuff with them within the editor since a very long time, and given how MAGIX now has VEGAS on its hands I thought "Hey, they could probably improve that one part 👀👀👀👀"

VEGAS is my main video editing program, yes, yes; and even though I can use some software to add to my needs it just doesn't feel... right. Feels detached to have to proxy so many stuff (and some don't even work as expected...)

++: If this post by any chance breaks any rules do let me know, just wanted to let this out (And I haven't been interacting much with the forum but I'm developing an extension that's Discord related so I miiiight share something someday soon).

VEGAS needs more love

I love the 3d space, I used it to build a quasi 3d model of a building using an east and south facing, both from photos and the results were pretty decent.

I think people should be a bit more realistic, if you need an AE type treatment, there it is, it is called After Effects, and that is what a Premiere user expects and any other NLE; can it do more? should it? perhaps it could/should but in the meantime, there are programs - as you mentioned, to get the job done. That said, certainly Vegas is coming on with some good things, I think we are going to see motion tracking and from there 3d manipulations could be coming on as well....who knows. But you make a good point, the basic is there. And not bad. Not bad at all.

I've just been exploring the 3D space a bit and wonder why you don't see more power users creating stuff. Lately I've been having a lot of fun coming up with all kinds of crazy art work in the program. I think it is more than safe to say that Vegas has tremendous untapped potential and I believe that anything you can do in Premiere, you can do in Vegas. I also believe that a fair amount of stuff you can do in AE, you can also do in Vegas. But it takes some creativity to get there. Do you have any links to some of your 3D projects? I'd be interested in seeing them.

I do, infact...
I'm somebody who mains SM64 Machinima and I'm one of the people that showed the power of VEGAS to people who were Premiere elitists there 😜
There's some old 3D composite tests I used as warmup and I keep doing stuff with 3DC; they're in my second channel, here's a few:

First test one year ago:
Playing with the Z-width to simulate 2D to 3D:
An obsolete intro:
Rhythm Heaven related stuff: ,
A better but still unused intro:
Early version of something I was making for an univ. project:
Something recent that I'm particularly proud of:

I don't see many people using 3DC but it sure is fun to mess around with it

Thanks for sharing all this. Here's the kind of stuff I'm messing around with.

Nice to see someone who is using the 3D functionality!

Curious how you did the trailing star effect on the very last end of this one. Maybe you could post a tutorial about it.

It was the cheapest thing ever, just two more tracks with lower opacity and a delay 😜
but it works, and I can recycle the tracks so...
