You can record directly to the drive now, but Vegas doesn't have a mechanism to allow for remote starting/stopping.
DV Rack with the HDV PowerPak is a great way to do this; it will stop/start with the record button on your cam, plus offers a very nice display/monitor along with scopes, audio analyzer, and a few other goodies.

It is as douglas says - I have also done some tests, since we will have to film an event live, where we intend to capture to external HDs via firewire, edit the footage immediately for a presentation.

Yes, that works fine so far. There are some limitations on consumer camcorders:
- some camecorder will switch off after some time. For example, in my NV-MX350 the camcorer switches of, when a tape is inside, but when you do not record on the tape.

- some camcorders will switch to a demo mode. So does my MX350, when no tape is inside, after 10 minutes.

So, make sure to test that with your equipment in advance. Deactivate the button, where you stop capturing if you lose a frame.
