Vegas and Real-Time

Hi.
Anyone knows if Sony Vegas is going to support a real-time editing, with or without a specific hardware, to contrast other NLE products (see Canopus or Pinnacle for example)? Has Sony in project to do it or not? Would be great to eliminate the problem of rendering... many people with growing of their work are moving to other solutions just because of the RealTime editing!!!

Bye.

I don't know if Pinnacle is such a great example but I get your point :)

NAB is coming up and hopefully your question will be answered there.

I know! I only know Pinnacle is just using a method for RealTime that is independent from hardware cards: is only using the power of the CPU and able to apply effects and transitions in real-time! I Pinnacle is not a great example, but i wanted to point attentions on which directions others are moving: the Liquid edition is supporting also multicamera, another good thing for many NLE editors!! Anyway, I hope Vegas will permit to work in real-time and Sony will develop some applications and tools to make it a real complete software for NLE working!!

Raffo, I think you've missed it. Vegas was the first to support real time editing using only the CPU with no hardware assistance. It's been able to do that since version 2. No rendering is necessary in order to preview. True, the frame rate starts dropping with slower processors and more effects or layers. But, this also happens with the hardware assisted editors. CPUs are gaining power much faster than hardware assist boards are, so Vegas is already poised to go beyond the other products in full frame rate editing in real time.

In fact, Vegas is one of the few that lets you edit while previewing in real time!

Hey, I know that!!! I am not speaking about PREVIEEW real-time, I am speaking about a real-time effective (see Canopus Edius with DV Storm)!!! As I heard the vesrion 6 of Pinnacle Liquid Edition is doing that by using the CPU and no other hardware! Maybe a misunderstanding??
The fact that Vegas allows to preview in real-time the effects and transitions applied is a very nice thing, I agree, but what about the necessary rendering befor to output your job? This is my question!

I'll venture far enough to say you'll likely never see DV-hardware acceleration for Vegas, simply because of the timing of faster procs. The AMD multicores can even provide HD with no hiccuping.
Rendering will always be with us, but it can be done:
A. Hardware assisted-Don't count on it for Vegas in DV
B. Rendered in background. This is how Pinnacle and Edius work without hardware. Edius works pretty good. Pinnacle doesn't work worth crap.
C. When the project is done. This is Vegas' weakest point, IMO. Render times are slower than they could/should be.

Anyway, hardware assistance would have been nice 3-4 years ago in Vegas, even up to 18 months ago. Nowadays, it's not worth the time for most things, particularly not in DV. Certain types of FX, graphics, composited media....these kinds of things can be so complex that nothing can work with it on the fly, so having OGL or something else that helps would be sweet too. We can only hope for what the future may hold.

Excuse me, but what you mean with "OGL"? Sorry for my poor english!

Not really.
Edius use a buffer for RT playback.
And many FX can be run with out reduction of this buffer (full DV quality). Very impressive !
I very hope Vegas will be improved on this point.

Open GL. Up until recently it has been mainly used for graphics. More and more video cards are coming out that have fast speeds and losts of memory and are great if one uses them for graphic/CAD work. (and yeah - gaming) The concept would be to have OGL start to handle previews/renders for actual video. RedGL allows for this to a certian degree, but still mainly on the graphic side only. After Effects also allows for this. A few of the card vendors are building in native HD rendering which is awesome - we only need NLE's like Vegas to tap into this. (Premiere Pro 1.5.1 sort of taps into this now - it allows SD output via dual monitor when cutting HD/HDV. It works great - and if it was actually outputting HD it would even be better)

Yes, Edius, even in OHCI mode, i.e. WITHOUT hardware acceleration, is very impressive in its realtime capabilities. It can even play colour-corrected MPEG2 files in realtime, through firewire. Maybe their programmers can somehow write more efficient code than their competitors?

Canopus are also listening to their customers (at long last) and Edius is getting more features and less clunky with every update. Sony doesn't give any sign that they are listening to us much. For example, what about the Track Motion presets?
