Vegas and the Dolby logo - to be or not to be SURROUND · EX

Cunhambebe wrote on 6/23/2004, 11:42 AM
I've got a Dolby Digital logo around here. I've seen that among other AC-3 encoding options, there seems to be an option for EX encoding:
-hit render as AC-3
-Choose 5.1 surround DVD
-Custom;
-on Ext. Bitstream guide, click Enable Extended Bitstream Information;
-Dolby Surround EX mode choose Dolby Surround EX encoded.

Questions:
1. Even without checking the box Enable Extended Bitstream Information, wil the AC-e file will be encoded as Dolby Digital Surround · EX? I mean, only choosing 5.1 Surround DVD is enough for encoding as DOlby Digital Surround · EX?
2.Anyway, what kind of logo do I have to select to put among the final credits: Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Surround · EX?

I need some help please.

Thanks in advance, folks! :)

You can't use the Dolby Logo without submiting a sample of your audio to them. They then run tests on it to make certain it meets their standards. When they've approved it, only then can you (legally) use the logo.

Thanks, but that was NOT my question. Did you read it? Please, don't mind if I'm going to use Dolby logo or not . When you buy Vegas and DVDA2.0 you're able to render as AC-3 5.1 Surround DVD. OK. Now if you please read my question I'd like to get to know what kind of Dolby encoding the AC-3 plugin does and what kind of logo I should use, even if it's privetly at hoooommmmmme.
Thanks a lot for answering.

I did read your questions, and your subject line, a couple of times, actually. Forgive me if I could not understand what you were asking. It wasn't all that clear.

. . . what kind of logo do I have to select to put among the final credits: Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Surround · EX

If that's not asking about using the Dolby logo, I don't know what is!

Very funny.... :) really!
Sorry, I apologize if I didn't make myseft clear. The second question comes as a conclusion for the 1st answer.

The answer is in your first question. If you enable the EX bitstream, you get Dolby Digital EX, if you don't, you get standard Dolby Digital 5.1

I'm not sure where the confusion is stemming from.

I'd have to go with guns1nger on this one.

Why would there be a checkbox for EX if Vegas were going to encode in EX whether you check the box or not?

Anyone care to enlighten me, what is the (dis)advantage to encoding to EX?
Jay Gladwell wrote on 6/23/2004, 5:32 PM
Farss . . . From Dolby Labs web site:

"Dolby Digital Surround EX adds to Dolby Digital 5.1 movie soundtracks a third surround channel, reproduced by speakers positioned directly behind the audience. This extra rear surround channel works with the usual left and right surround channels to produce an intensified realism that draws you even further into the action. As a result, alien creatures can circle all around you, fighter planes can fly directly over you, and rain can pour down all around you more realistically than ever before.

"The additional back surround information is encoded onto the regular left and right surround channels of otherwise conventional Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks. In cinemas equipped with Dolby Digital Surround EX decoding, the added information is reproduced as a third surround channel. In cinemas without Surround EX decoding, the extra information is played through the regular left and right surround channels, so no information is lost."

Thanks to all who took time to respond. That was a good question farss. And, yes, that was a good answer JAY.... :) From what I've read, EX is the 6.1....isn't it?????????
Now I'm going to put my logo Surround EX.....happy happy, joy joy .....It seems the difficult task is gonna be panning.....

You can't call it "6.1" though, as that 6th channel of sound isn't a discrete channel. It's matrixed from the two other discrete surround channels. So it's still 5.1 IMO. (or maybe 5.2) :)

hummmm. Well, thanks for that, Mr.

*shrug* The DVD player and receiver manufacturers are calling it 6.1... Surely they woudln't misrepresent their products?! ;-)

Technically it is still 6 channels (5.1), but it is 7 (or 8) speakers. If they refer to speakers as output channels, then I guess they ain't lying

If you're really into this stuff lookup Wendy Carlos's web site. I'm an engineer sooo... I'd made the mistake of thinking that four channels of sound means 90 deg between the speakers, oh boy was I wrong!

Seriously though they're does seem to be a lot of discussion about speakers for monitoring and very little about where they need to be.
