Can anyone tell me why, when I begin recording more than 3 or 4 trax the audio starts fine but gets further & further out of sync with the bed trax?

I've seen similar sync problems, only lately since 20h. As I get a lot of tracks, the latency rears its head, and recorded tracks are late. I tried all the hardware and buffering settings, went as low as 2 milliseconds with no relief.
I assume the standard answer is to get a faster CPU. I'm only using a P3-500, but I'm not using all that many tracks and effects.
The work arround I use is to use the Tools->render-to-new-track option to combine all my tracks into one,
use that as a guide to record the next one, then
delete the rendered one and go back to the individual ones. [doing many generations of rendering to a combined track seemed dangerous to me.]
Thanks for your reply. I am using Windows98 with a Pentium 4 1.5Ghz processor, a 6.4G fireball HD(not sure of speed, 18months old) and a Seagate 17G HD (12 months old), IDE, I don't know about DMA, I haven't 'tweaked' any settings at this point, there doesn't appear to be any conflicts and I turn all TRS's off when I record.
2 things I question are i) the soundcard I'm using is a standard used on motherboards now... Avance AC'97 and ii)the 'latency' problem. There's no help info on latency and I would not know how to adjust it even if it were a component of the sync/timing problem.
Thanks again and I look forward to your response
