Vegas can't read .AVI file

I have to do a project for my course and I ripped a DVD to an .avi format using AutoGK, but Vegas won't read it. It'll import it, but in the Trimmer it says it's offline and the timeline won't take it. This is my first time converting a DVD so I'm not sure what's wrong. It's just for a quick project where we have to cut together a movie trailer and I want to bypass having to dub Betacam SP tapes and just take in the .avi files so they can be used in Avid. However, I'm not sure Avid will read them now.

What version of Vegas are you using?
You should be able to import the files without using a third party program.

I'm using Vegas 6d. For some reason AutoGK made three versions of the DVD I ripped, but none work.

Try "File - Import - DVD Camcorder Disc".
BTW, this option won't work if it's a copyrighted disc.

AutoGK's output is either Divx or Xvid, neither of which are officially supported (as input formats) by Vegas. For best results, you should convert the files to DV. When I need to make DV files from VOB files, I use VirtualDubMod (making sure to change the compression setting so that output is a reliable DV codec such as Huffyuv or Panasonic DV).

Another option is to install ffdshow. This will put Video for Windows compatible Divx and Xvid codecs on your system, which may allow Vegas to read such files.

Okay, I'll try converting it to DV instead.

And the first I tried was importing the disc through Vegas, but I get an error every time.

Try copying desired .vob files to local disk. Then rename .vob to .mpg

Works for me!

Here's a method that works with any version of Vegas, and provides editing speed on the timeline that rivals what you get with DV AVI (editing MPEG-2 or VOB files is normally quite sluggish):

VFAPIConv editing of VOB files
