Vegas & Canon XHA1

Looking to see if anybody is using theanon CXHA1 HDV with Vegas. I've got a unique issue where my device driver doesn't recognized my camera on my desktop running XP Pro SP3. I was lead to this because Vegas Platinum could not preview the camera. This is surely not a Vegas issue.

I moved the 1394 cables and camera over to my laptop running XP Home SP3 and the device driver is able to "see" the camera.

My 1394 port on the front and backplane gives me the same results. I'm using the backplane connection on a 1TB Drive where there is no issue with it's use.

Any suggestion? My plan is to move the Platinum to my laptop and load Vegas Pro to my desktop. But I've got to get this issue worked out first.

Hi 1luckydog

My copy of Vegas does not recognise my XHA1 camera, either. I think you may find that this is a long-running problem. I hope the up-coming mods to Vegas fixes it, as it is a real pain.

The XHA1 is such a great camera, though, that it's worth some hassle. HDV Split, a free download works pretty well for capture.

In my own case, my wife owns a Canon HV20. I simply transfer the tape to this and download no problem.

Good luck.

Yes, this is a long-running problem, Sony is aware and hopefully will fix eventually. I use HDVSPLIT, it works great. Quite a few on this forum use this software.

Ye ol A1...
Beautiful unit..

Ok..

((Yes))

I've got a unique issue where my device driver doesn't recognized my camera on my desktop running XP Pro SP3.

((Its not unique my friend.. ))

I was lead to this because Vegas Platinum could not preview the camera. This is surely not a Vegas issue.

((It is in fact a Vegas issue.. Vegas 7 however DOES NOT have this issue. IMO< SCS should offer a rollback download for V7 for those wishing to use this camera with their software. You CAN capture in V7 and edit in V8... This is how i do it..
As for platinum.. im unsure.. ))

I moved the 1394 cables and camera over to my laptop running XP Home SP3 and the device driver is able to "see" the camera.

((is the camera set to HDV or DV mode? be aware that HDV mode is seen as a different system altogether.. in DV or downconvert, its seen as s imple 1394 device))

My 1394 port on the front and backplane gives me the same results.
((NEither port will make a difference... the only time a port plays a part, is if your using an SBLive soundcard with a 1394 interface. Then you just install the driver, but im sliding off topic..
It SHOULDNT MATTER which port the cable is in.. ))

I'm using the backplane connection on a 1TB Drive where there is no issue with it's use.

((OK))

Any suggestion?
((V7... ))

Well I hate to beat a dead horse but I couldn't understand why on my desktop the OS didn't recognize my XHA1 but if I swung the cable over to my laptop it would be recognized. Also when I ran the HDVSplit and it didn't see the camera.

Having nothing better to do so I copied the device settings from the laptop on different config's from the camera:

Laptop XP Home SP3
IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers
OCHI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller

HDV onDV & off system setup
Camera Mode - Auto
Sound, Video and Game Controllers
AV/C Tape Device

DV onDV & off system setup
Camera Mode Auto
Imaging Devices
Canon DV Camcorder

When on Ext Cont (HDV) it shows up as both AV/C Tape & Canon DV Camcorder
When on Ext Cont (DV) it show up as Canon Camera Storage Device & Canon DV Camcorder under Imaging Device
When on VCR/Play - AV/C Tape

When using the trial Console 1.1 (just checking it out)
Imaging devices
Canon Virtual VCR
Sound, Video and Game Controllers
AV/C Tape Device

None of the items showed up on my desktop. I checked out the Console Trouble shooting guide and came up with:

Camcorder will not be recognized or controlled.
􀃎A camcorder not supported by CONSOLE is connected. Check if your camcorder is supported
by CONSOLE
􀃎The DV CONTROL function of the camcorder is set to [OFF]. Set the DV CONTROL function to
[ON].
􀃎More than one camcorder is connected to the computer’s IEEE1394 (DV) terminal. Connect only one camcorder to the computer’s IEEE1394 (DV) terminal.
􀃎If your computer has an IEEE1394 (DV) board/card in addition to the standard IEEE1394 (DV) board/card, or if you have more than 2 IEEE1394 (DV) boards/cards added to the computer, the computer may not recognize the camcorder properly. You need to plug the IEEE1394 (DV) cable to a different board’s/card’s terminal.

To check if the cable is properly connected, follow the instructions below.
1) Set the camcorder to EXT.CONT. and connect to the computer.
2) Open the [Device Manager] window. ( 7-56)
3) Select [Devices by connection] from the [View] menu.
4) Look for the IEEE1394 controller with [Canon Virtual VCR].
5) Confirm that [AV/C Tape Device] or [Canon DV Camcorder] is connected.

This lead me to move the rear 1394 Hard Drive connection to the front and plug in the camera in the rear. Lo and Behold the device manager recognized the camera and I was able to capture both live and video from the tape to disk.

It seems that in this case the FireWire/1394 controller on my motherboard can support only one connection as the hard drive didn't work ether (or something else). So I connected the drive via a USB and all is well.;-)

This probably has nothing to do with the issue in Vegas Pro.

seems to me one of your systems is having too many connections.. my laptop wont boot up properly with my fingerprint reader if i keep all 6 USB HDD connected... I have to unplug at least 2 for the system to kick in...

I dont doubt that windows is having issues with managing all these external devices.. hell, ive never been ableto get ANY version of XP to run 1394 HDD's properly.. XP ALWAYS (no joke) kills these drives.. but through USB, its fine..

Try the cam on its own and mess with the daisychain... mix and match and experiement.. i had to do that with my lapy too.. then i figured it was simply XP puking at whatever was connected
