Vegas Caption gurus, getting SCC file w/o render

Former user wrote on 3/27/2013, 10:02 PM
I use Vegas and Caption Assistant to create captions where I work. But I don't have access to tape output from Vegas so I generally create an SCC file. Right now the only way to do that is to start a render to a format that doesn't support captions, so I normally render to mpeg1 and then cancel it.

I am assuming that Vegas is making a call to a subroutine to create the SCC file, but I can't determine if it is part of the vegas.exe program or an external program. I would like to create a script that exports an SCC file, similar to how they have scripts to export other types of captions.

Anyone have any ideas or can help with a script to create the SCC file?

Thanks

If I could I would have added it to Caption Assistant. It's an internal Vegas Pro function that is not callable from the Script API. I do the same thing you do (i.e., start a render and cancel) to get an SCC file.

Perhaps we should be asking Sony to make this a button on the Render menu to just create the captions.

I asked if it was possible to create a script to export SCC and the answer I got was "yes". Not real helpful.

But yeah, I will make a suggestion.

I did find some other caption software that is reasonably priced that I downloaded the demo to see if works. It allows for a lot more exported formats.

Hey Dave, when I do my long form CC in Vegas, it always creates a SCC file when rendering to a format that contains CC.

I don't know if this is useful for your purpose.

To just export CC goto:

Tools>
Scripting>
Export Closed Captions for Realplayer/QT/Window Media Player/DVDA

I use Realplayer and SCC with Vegas all the time. I get my CC via .rt (realplayer CC format) from my caption service.

So if you can use one of the other CC formats you have some options right now..

I use V11 for my captioning and do all editing in V9.

Logan5,

Thanks for your advice. I am aware of the scripts for exporting other formats. SCC is a very standardized format though so I am more comfortable in using it. I have to run it through another program to convert to DFXP XML and other formats so I would prefer not to convert from another format.

Since they included scripts for other exports, I am confused why they didn't include one for an SCC file. They have already done the groundwork for creating it. They just need to allow us access to it.

Yea, I've wondered about the "missing" SCC option as well. I'm assuming that the programers thought that auto SCC generation on render would cover that CC format.

I would stay with CC format that works for you...don't need any CC heartburn...right?

Yep, stay with the devil you know.

Thanks again,
