Vegas Capture only works on first use

Vegas Pro 18 Build 284. I can use Vegas Capture successfully to record from my screen and external cameras, eg a Canon XA-10 connexed via CamLink 4K and USB 3.

However, if I close Vegas Capture and re-open it all I get is a black screen where the Vegas Capture window used to be.Problem persists after restarting Vegas Pro.

Any thoughts?

Yes, that fixes it, but why is that necessary? I used Wise memory Optimiser but that didn't help.
