Vegas & Control Surfaces

I'm sort of copying this from the Audio forum. Behringer have a 8 channel control surface just come onto the market for AUD 490.
This is WAY cheaper than anything else and would seem an ideal way to automate not just audio envelopes but also video.

I don't have one as yet, (space is the problem!) so I cannot comment on how easy it'd be to set it up to work with Vegas but once someone has it 'cracked' the config files could be shared.

The Mackie would be great but hey this box seems a lot cheaper and probably more affordable for a lot of the video guys. Probably doesn't have the quality of the Mackie but that will not affect the mix.

Please be very careful with Behringer products. I purchased a 6 channel splitter mixer from them, a ripoff of the Rane SM-26. The first problem was that the outputs were unbalanced. Not a big issue because the unit would be in a rack in close proximity to the other equipment. But the next issue was that the output was out of phase with the input. Since it was unbalanced it was impossible to swap the phase. You can't switch a ground with a hot.

Anyway, research the product before you buy.

Looks and sounds very interesting, Bob - I'll try and find somewhere over here where I can check it out.

Be interesting to see how it compares to the Mackie, function wise.

Just got back from VASST, long day although not as long as SPOTs, don't know how the guys keeps going.
I don't think the Behringer would come close to the Mackie however it's about a quarter the price and it is only a control surface. That means no matter how well or bad it's built it will have no effect on the quality of a mix. Bit like using a mouse with say Word. If the mouse is really crappy it'll make the task more difficult but no matter which mouse you use 12pt Ariel will still be 12pt Ariel if you get what I mean. All that a control surface does it write envelope data into Vegas or read the data back from the envelope to control the faders. The audio does not pass through thr control surface.

I think the point I'm really getting at is this thing is damn cheap and does open up a new way of using Vegas and not just for audio. SPOT demoed the Mackie today and look, if full on audio production was your thing then you wouldn't think twice about the cost of the Mackie anymore than you would the cost of good mics. But the Behringer is affordable, even by the DIY guys like myslef.
