vegas crackling (~_~)

I recently purchased Vegas 4.0 and thought it would be a great tool to record, edit and master my audio on. I also use SoundForge and Acid (not the drug). The features of Vegas are awesome, but when I record, there is crackling. I've done trouble shooting and taken components out of the chain, ie mixer, processors, etc. and it seems to lead to the software. I've read a lot of the forum chains regarding this issue. Has Sony put out an upgrade to fix this problem (excluding 5.0)? Any other suggestions. I'm really bummed out. I thought Vegas might be able to replace my recording console, but the crackling...aaahhh!! I can't have that!

It is not inherent in the software - I can record 24 tracks for hours without a single anomaly. You're going to need to give us some details about your system before anyone can offer worthwhile suggestions.

Need some more information:

- Audio hardware used.
- Audio drivers used.
- Buffer settings at hardware and software level.

I'm inputting my signals through a MobilePre unit - the driver is 5.10.0.3509. Since I'm new to recording on the computer, I don't know what buffer settings are. I do know that everything is set to 44kHz and 16 bit sampling. I have my processor scheduling set to background services and my visual effects adjusted for best performance. I have a Pentium 4 and 512 ram.
