I mention this because it is the only reason Vegas has ever crashed on me. Does it crash with the same project/media?

In my case, a corrupt media file (still image) caused the crash - took a while to identify it btw...
mazzo wrote on 4/15/2004, 4:38 AM
It crashes at startup - the hourglass is using some time at the nagscreen, and then it crashes.

Try unistalling / reinstalling... if that doesn't clear it up.. you defragging your hard drives regularly? Corrupt media could be the culprit also.

TheHappyFriar wrote on 4/15/2004, 6:10 AM
If it's corrupt media then re-installing will fix that (it's auto-opening a project with corrupt media). Als, you could try double clicking on a veg file (several different ones infact). Als, what error is it spitting out?

"Vegas has generated errors and will be closed. The error will be logged. You need to restart the program".

After restarting the same thing happens.

I've tried reinstalling with no success. I CAN try to remove all veg files, is that a good idea?

Just move all of the VEG files to a safe location (away from where they are now), Open Vegas, and then turn OFF the option to auto-open the last project.

Thanks. Will do.

I don't want to hijack this thread but I feel it relates. I am writing this as a project I'm doing is locked up and not responding. I have tried reformatting the C drive and reinstalling V4 with the Sony brand ( which they suggested) but it doesn't help. My system includes a 3 ghz P4 ( which shows about 2-3% usage when this is happening) and everything else besides V4 functions fine. IOW, the PC is not locked up just V4. I have to go shut it down in Task Manager (thank God for auto-save) almost every time (ie this time, it's still not responding). It doesn't seem to be anyhing specific that causes it; this time I was just clicking on the timeline to advance the cursor during playback. The master VU is stuck and the time display is blank. I've lived with it, just waiting on V5 in hopes that it's fixed, but when it happens with a client is here, it's very embarrassing.
Update : FWIW, one thing I just noticed is that Task Manager showed two V4s open so I finally decided to click on one to close and both dissappeared when choosing to "end now".
If you have any advice at all I would certainly appreciate it.
TIA,
Randy

Check to see what audio device you're using in the preferences menu. If you have "direct sound mapper" that can cause problems.

hope that helps!

Thanks,
I have a Delta 1010 (10 ins and 10 outs) and was told by Vegas support to not use their ASIO driver but to use "Classic Windows". After still having troubles I disabled all of the I/O except channels 1 and 2 but I guess no help.
I was reading on another thread here, "OT: hard drive woes" about someone suggesting reformatting the drive you keep your files on (I've reformatted my C drive but not my 2nd or 3rd drives. Out of desperation I moved the files off of my SATA drive and reformatted; I'll report back if I notice a difference.
Thanks again Happy Friar,
Randy

Back to me. I have deleted all the veg files. I have removed and reinstalled Vegas. It crashes. Even if I try to run it in DEMO mode. Neither Sound Forge (7) nor Vegas Lite (my son uses it) crash.

So - back to the first quiestion: Any ideas besides reformatting the drive?
TheHappyFriar wrote on 4/15/2004, 5:31 PM
Vegas Lite? Is that VV 3 LE? Also, what folder is SF 7 installed in? If you install it to the same folder as Vegas (c:\program files\sonic foundry\) then it can cause problems.
TomG wrote on 4/15/2004, 6:06 PM
You may want to consider restoring your system to a previous date (sometime before Vegas started crashing) just in case there was a system change. I always install the latest WIN XP security updates, driver updates, etc. and sometime (oh no, MS would never let this happen) the update screws up something else.

Wish I could offer more help,

TomG

I run 2000 on this machine. I made another user, and logged me in and used Vegas from there. It seemed to work fine then, but I shouldn't have to log off and log in as another user just to use one program-
mazzo wrote on 4/16/2004, 3:26 AM
I have discovered 3 processes that ran at my usual user that didn't run in the new user, but when I stopped them, I got no improvement.

The codecs are all the same for both users.
TheHappyFriar wrote on 4/16/2004, 6:11 AM
are both of your users NOT administrator (ie, called steve, bob, ralph, phill, worker, NOT administrator?) I've had problems with EVERY win2k computer i've worked on & not logging in as administrator UNLESS I made the account durring the OS install. When I've logged in as admin I have no problems.

This included users with admin right made AFTER I install the os.

Case solved. It used d:\temp as temporary files directory, but THAT directory was corrupted by over 20000 small files.
Zlashy wrote on 10/24/2004, 3:00 AM
and how did you fix so i didnt used d:\temp then because i have the same problem and i can't fix it
JL wrote on 10/24/2004, 9:13 AM
To set the location of Temporary files in Vegas: from the Vegas pulldown menu select Options > Preferences > General – you’ll find a text box near the bottom of the window and can ‘browse’ to set.
