Vegas crashes instantly when importing video media

Mike-C wrote on 9/7/2021, 5:25 PM

I was using Vegas Movie Studio 17 Platinum and decided to upgrade to Vegas Pro due to the EOL of Movie Studio. I installed with no problems. I searched for updates, and the NVIDIA had updates. I ran the driver updates but still crashing. I did not uninstall Movie Studio . I am trying to open the same media files I used in Movie Studio. I even tried importing the Movie Studio project and it crashes instantly. I am able to import jpg media and an mp3.

We need details on the video files. What file format? What is the codec used in the files?

Mike-C wrote on 9/8/2021, 3:25 AM

Sorry, I meant to mention the video types. I tried several .mp4 files that were fine in Movie Studio, and one .mov file. Below is the MediaInfo for one of the .mp4 files and the .mov files tested. Both are in the Advanced Audio Codec Low Complexity.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You can actually just copy and paste the text as text. Easier to read that way.

RogerS wrote on 9/8/2021, 3:55 AM

The second .mov one looks like variable framerate with a low of 10fps and high of 60fps! That is quite a range. You might try to transcode it to constant framerate before bringing into Vegas (using Handbrake, Shutter Encoder, etc.)

Mike-C wrote on 9/8/2021, 4:02 AM

Update: I found a message where it was suggested to turn of GPU Acceleration in preferences. After doing that, I am able to import both the .mp4 and .mov files and add them to the timeline. However, is that my only option, to disable GPU acceleration. What will that do to performance.

Regards,

MikeC

Mike-C wrote on 9/8/2021, 4:05 AM

Ok, I will try to transcode with Handbrake and see if that allows me to turn GPU Acceleration back on. Will update when I get that done. I installed Handbrake and it is not recognizing that I have .NET installed.

EricLNZ wrote on 9/8/2021, 4:18 AM

@Mike-C I updated Handbrake today and also needed to download a .Net version but it was additional to that which I already had.

Mike-C wrote on 9/8/2021, 4:27 AM

@EricLNZ I had to install .NET for Handbrake since I did not have it, therefore I only have the latest version and no other version instance. Could that be an issue? Doesn't sound like it because you had to update to the latest ... just grabbing at straws here.

Sorry, my mistake, I downloaded and installed the wrong .NETversion. I installed the Console App version rather than the Desktop App version. Handbrake is now running.

EricLNZ wrote on 9/8/2021, 4:40 AM

@Mike-C I don't know. I get the impression different NET do different things.

Assuming you haven't got it working, when you activate Handbrake you get a NET message and link to here https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet/5.0/runtime?utm_source=getdotnetcore&utm_medium=referral

Download the X64 version, install, reboot and you should be okay when you open Handbrake.

I have transcoded the .mov file with handbrake several ways, always constant frame rate, tried mpeg2, and reduced quality. All cause Vegas to crash as soon as I try to import into project. Turning off GPU acceleration fixes that problem, but optimally wouldn't I rather have acceleration on. Where will I be sacrificing. Is it only on playback or does it effect rendering.

- Which Vegas Pro and buildnr,\. do you use
- Which exactly videocard is your "NVIDIA Pro" and wich is the number of driver is installed for it?
- Which exactly processor is your "Intel i7"?

Hi @j-v , I think the problem is fixed now, but I want to go ahead and provide the info to your questions and then explain what I did that seems to have fixed the issue. This may help someone, or someone may understand exactly what happened here. I say "seems", because I want to see if things remain stable after trying several other files and using the software for a while since it is new to my system.

To your questions:

  • Vegas Pro 19 (build 341) which is the latest as of today
  • NVIDIA Quadro P3200 with latest driver - 471.68
  • Processor :   Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz, 2201 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s)

Below is what led me to which has hopefully fixed this issue for sure. I haven't seen this before but it looks like I have both Intel Video and an NVIDIA but I am noticing that it says its is compatible. That sounds like its not really NVIDIA hardware???

I saw that I had two display drivers when I looked at the Display Info section from System Info:

So I decided to check for Windows Updates. I found that I had several Optional updates that were not installed, many were Intel, and one specifically for the Intel UHD driver. So I went ahead and installed them all. After rebooting I checked the GPU Acceleration setting in Vegas and the Intel UHD was now available . Before I only had the NVIDIA as an option. I have set the acceleration to both the Intel UHD and the NVIDIA and no more crashes with either one.

So this was a surprise to me that there are two Display drivers, but maybe not to others. It sounds to me like I do not actually have NVIDIA hardware, just a compatible adapter able to run NVIDIA software. If any one understands why this would happen, I welcome the lesson.

So it looks like this is solved for now. Thanks to everyone for the help.

That looks impossible to me.
I use both GPu's on my hardware and it is impossible to choose both for video acceleration.
Your choices are

- "off"

- "Optimal Nvidia"

- and "Intel (R)"

Your Intel has to be set at Options/Preferences/File I/O

No problem here, but good you found your solution.👍
From VPro 18 and higher the program finds itself the best options and activate those.so that there is no need to make your own choices.
Sometimes it is needed to update drivers but also for that is an option under help.

To summarize the quick fix that solved my problem.

First I ran the Check for Driver Updates under the Help Menu and it returned two updates for my NVIDIA P3200. However, that did not fix the issue and I eventually noticed under the "Display' information from the System Info app that there is both an NVIDIA and onboard Intel UHD display driver on my system, But still Vegas was only showing the NVIDIA. That prompted me to see if there was a Windows Update for the displays. Note that I was not allowing windows to automatically install Optional Driver updates and there I found several updates for Intel, including one for the Intel UHD. I then installed them all and after, Vegas was recognizing the Intel UHD and it was no longer crashing.

So you can now playback the files using the Intel iGPU for decoding and GPU acceleration on in preferences/video? If so, great!

I'd still recommend transcoding that footage with the huge swing in framerates.

Mike-C wrote on 9/9/2021, 8:28 AM

@RogerS Yes, can playback the files using GPU acceleration with either of the two display drivers, I leave it on NVIDIA of course. And I have transcoded that .mov file to a constant frame rate. Thanks for your help.
