Vegas Crashes with heavy Mouse use

Vegas keeps crashing (repeatedly) while editing intensive video piece with the mouse. Specifically using the mouse to start and stop playback on the timeline. While adding markers throughout the piece. The file size is about 11 GB. Maybe I'm being too quick to make it pause and restart. It seems to crash while doing this...

That shouldn't be happening.

First question: Is your video clip on a seperate hard drive, or on the system drive?

What version of vegas? What type of file is this?

The video clip is on a separate hard drive using ADS Pyro enclosure w/ Seagate 120GB 7200RPM 8MB cache drive. Vegas 4.0d, 11 GB AVI file. I've switched to using the ShuttlePRO for most navigating, now getting better results. No crashes after being more careful with the mouse. But the mouse is still handy for quick selections across the timeline.

The problem only occurs during playback while mouse clicking ahead on the timeline (while editing) causing playback to jump ahead. I'm sure this is very processor intensive.

That's a common proceedure around here, but never causes a crash.
