Vegas EDL Import Plug-in

This plug-in adds the ability to import Sonic Foundry's Vegas EDL files into Adobe After Effects as a Composition (similar to importing a Premiere Project into After Effects).

This plug-in was originally developed in-house to allow us to rough cut video in Vegas, then import and finish in After Effects.

This plug-in adds the ability to import Sonic Foundry's Vegas EDL files into
Adobe After Effects as a Composition (similar to importing a Premiere Project
into After Effects).

This plug-in was developed in-house to allow us to rough cut DV video in Vegas, then import and finish in After Effects.

Installation

Unzip to After Effects Plug-Ins directory. After Effects 5.5 or above.
Vegas 3.0 or above. PC only.

To Use

Create a project in Vegas. Make sure you save the project as a regular Vegas project first, as you would normally. Then File->Save As and under
"Save as Type", select "EDL Text File (*.txt)". Vegas will save the file with
a .txt extension.

Start up After Effects, then File->Import->File. Select the .txt file you just
saved. The Format value in the Import File dialog box should read "Vegas EDL".
The EDL file is imported as a composition and named the same as the file with "-VegasEDL" appended (e.g., the Vegas EDL file "MyProject.txt" becomes the After Effects composition "MyProject-VegasEDL").

Limitations

The Vegas EDL file has many limitations. Read the Vegas manual for info but, in summary:
* in/out points and filenames are included.
* transition effects are replaced with crossfades.
* envelopes, pans, crops, effects, etc are not included.
* project settings like height, width, fps are not included.

Specific issues to be aware of:

* the plug-in sets the basic composition values based on the first footage item. These items are height, width, fps, aspect ratio and footage interpolation. So don't include a still as the first footage item in a
Vegas project (it has fps=0).

* if you drag a clip past its endpoint in Vegas, it loops. This looping is handled correctly, unless in Vegas you deselect the Loop switch for that footage which, in Vegas, results in the clip then holding on its initial
endpoint for the duration of the clip. When imported into After Effects, this
footage is truncated.

* since cropping and sizing info is not included in the EDL, items are simply scaled to fit the frame.

* note that some footage types (primarily Windows Media) are ok in Vegas but not handled in After Effects. Trying to import them will generate an error.

* trying to import missing footage files generate an error.

* changing the footage speed in Vegas (the Playrate value in the EDL) is not handled in this plug-in. Maybe version 2 if its asked for enough.

A copy of the plug-in can be purchased for just $20.00.
