Vegas Explorer Preview Choppy

Hello, I am a former Screenblast 3.0c user that have recently moved up to Vegas 5. When previewing clips from the Vegas explorer in the preview window the playback is very choppy (seems to start and stop) and yes I have tried all the settings of (Preview full or Best, etc). This feature worked better for me in Screenblast 3.0c on a Windows ME system. I am now using Vegas 5 on a Sony Vaio, Pentium IV, 3.4 ghrz and 1gb ram, etc. CPU usage is only at about 1-2% when using the Vegas explorer. My guess is that it a simple fix for someone who understands what is happening. Ideas anyone? Thanks for your help!

is your project loaded with effects?

I am not talking about previewing the project from the timeline but rather clips previewed when I navigate to a folder using the Vegas explorer and have the preview button above the preview window set to automatically play the clip I select in the preview window. Sorry if my post was confusing.
