Vegas fails to put tracks on CD -- sometimes

I just came across a Vegas bug that has been reported at least twice before on this forum:

CD burning with VV - question

and

Burning CD with Tracks

The problem is simple to describe: the CD burns, but it burns then entire CD as one track. I definitely used CD tracks (using "N" to insert the tracks), not markers or regions. In addition, I successfully burned a test CD-RW and played it on a set-top CD player, and it worked fine. Only when I then burned to a permanent CD-R did the problem occur.

I then quit from Vegas, started Vegas again, and have just now burned successfully to a CD-RW. Now, I am going to try again, to another CD-R.

I hate wasting media and time this way. If anyone (including Sony) has an idea, please let me know.

I am using Vegas 4.0d, Windows XP Pro (SP1). I have Nero 5.5 installed, although it was not running at the time of the problem.

As a quick postscript to my original post: I just re-booted and then burned to a CD-R from the exact same Vegas project. This time I got a CD with tracks. However, I couldn't read the CD in my CD drive. I tried quitting from Vegas, ejecting the disk and then putting it back into the drive. It wouldn't read. I then put it into my DVD drive, and it read just fine. Also, it plays fine in my set-top CD player. I then re-booted my computer and put the disk into my CD burner drive, and this time it read just fine.

There is definitely something bad that Vegas is doing to my system when burning.

I have checked my hardware device properties, and everything is OK. I have burned hundreds of CDs, both audio and data, on this burner over the past 15 months, using Nero, and have had no problems. This is the first time I have used Vegas to burn a CD.

My hardware device manager shows the CD-RW drive as a MS-8348.

Also, I have the Pinnacle Instantwrite drive installed (although I never use it).
