vegas five quicks when capturing

I am trying to capture video using a pd170 to vegas 5 but when I hit capture a error message comes up and the application shuts down. The same thing happens when I try to capture to the windows XP moviemaker also. Is this a firewire problem or the os?

May we have a little more information please. What does the error message say? Which application shuts down? What program are you using in your attempt to capture?

Is your PD-170 set up for DV out? There's a menu item in the PD-150 that enables this and I imagine a similar setting must be on the PD-170.

the message says vegas 5 has encountered an error and will have to shut down. It also happens when I try to capture from a D8 camera. Also when I try to open wmv files in explorer the brower shuts down. I'm not sure if that is related to the capture problem.

Yes, if Movie Maker can't capture either it's an OS problem. Try updating DirectX before doing a clean OS install.
