Vegas for Video, and for Stills?

Well, I think most of us here will agree we want to use Vegas for Video. :)

But what's your editor of choice when you have to use still images in your Vegas creations? Do you use Vegas filters to do things like color correction or chromakeying out backgrounds? I assume that is wastefully intensive to a rendering when the source is just a single frame repeated over and over. Or do you have an image editing program? If so, what is your favorite?

I use Photoshop---much more powerful and flexible when it comes to tweaking stills.

This keep coming up and its always the same answer. PHOTOSHOP if you can afford it is so far ahead of the others its laughable to compare anything to do it. There is nothing else that has all the bells and whistles. The point is though 999 out of a 1,000 people won't need all those bells and whistles. I don't either, but I got version 3 with my first scanner and I've kept upgrading. The latest version CS is super.

That said I doubt any video needs the power of Photoshop. So unless you do a lot of still image work and invest the time to learn all Photoshop can do, the learning curves is far steeper that Vegas to learn it all, then something like Paint Shop Pro or GIMP (a free and excellent Photoshop knockoff originally made for Linux, but ported to Windows) or any number of dozens of others will get you though simpler things. In fact if all you need to do is some quick color adjustment you can do it right in Vegas, even more complex masks are supported now

Ulead PhotoImpact is a good choice if Photoshop is not an option. It's certainly no Photoshop but it can do a lot to make images look like you need them to. Photoshop also has a limited version called Photoshop Elements but it's quite basic. Photoimpact would be the better choice between those two.

Photoshop (CS) is undoubtedly the king. There is simply nothing better. Period.

But...

Paint Shop Pro is very, very good, especially for the money.

Fireworks (from MX up) is also an excellent choice. I stopped upgrading Photoshop at version 5.5 and now almost never open it.

I edit images every day for work.
