Vegas freezes machine on startup

I have tried to install demo 2.0g several times on my Windows 2000 machine, but when I try to load it, I get the startup Vegas Audio screen, and then my machine completely freezes, including the mouse pointer (can't even CTRL-ALT-DELETE).

My setup:
AMD Athlon 1GHz
FIC AZ11EA motherboard (latest BIOS)
256 MB PC-133 SDRAM
QPS 24x CD-RW drive
Toshiba 12x DVD-ROM drive
Western Digital 60GB Ultra/100 HDD
Diamond Stealth S540 video card (latest drivers)
Windows 2000 service pack 2
All other drivers/directx are the latest versions

I have tried three soundcards with the same result:
Built in VIA chipset sound (on motherboard)
SoundBlaster Live Value
Guillemot Maxi Sound Fortissmo

I have removed all other unnecessary components to try and troubleshoot (NIC, modem, etc.) but nothing seems to work... just a HARD freeze every time. No other program makes my machine lock up like this (I use Cakewalk 9.0 for audio currently, with no problems).

Anyone seen this problem before?

Sorry, I should have said Vegas 2.0b. I apologize for the error.

Why not try Vegas 5.0b instead? Vegas 2 was replaced years ago.

If you are running 3 sound cards, I would say you have a resource conflict.
