Vegas hang on my new AMD X2 system ;(

Hi

I have just got my new PC and everything run fast and flawless, but unfortunately not Vegas, which was the primary reason I bought this system.

It hangs from 2 to 10 minutes after a boot, but after that it run rock solid as usual, until after next Windows-boot.

I have tried everything I can think of, but nothing has helped.

Here is what I have done several times:

- uninstalled all Sony software incl. Sony MM and MS SQL ,
- deleted all Sony folders incl. the Sony folders in the Application-folder.
- Deleted all Sony setup folders.
- Cleaned up the registry with RegSuprime.
- Downloaded a another new Vegas6d.
- Run checkdisk and defragmented the C: drive.
- Turn of MM and Sony start up splash.
- Ran EndtItAll to close "running processes"

Nothing has helped.

My new system:

AMD X2 3800+, Antec Sonata II, ASUS A8N SLI Premium, 2GB DDR Kingston ValueRam PC400, 2 PATA Seagate HDD, Vapo Chill Low noise cooler, ASUS Geforce Extreme N6600 Silencer PCIe, NEC 4571 burner, LG DVD-drive, Sunbeam Cardreader and WinXP Pro.

The C: drive is a 30 GB partition on a 300 GB HDD and I have only installed WinXP and Programs on it. I have also moved my document-folder to another partition.

I have never had any problem with Vegas in those tree years I have own it, always been rock solid, so I hope you can help me.

Another question:
I get a new 300 GB Seagate SATA2 HDD in the end of this week (were out of stock).
Should I make it as my system drive?

I’m not sure what Vegas would have to do with your system booting. It has nothing running at that point and has no resident programs.

Try unplugging the Sunbeam Cardreader and see if that helps. I had a multi-function card reader on my last PC that use to hang the boot every once in a while. It seems that Windows would check these card drives for media and the card reader would not respond so Windows would wait until each one timed out. This made for very long boot times until I unplugged it.

It’s worth a shot.

Make sure your NEC and LG are on the secondary IDE buss. Also download the latest drivers for your motherboard. SATA2 stuff will require the latest drivers. It will not hurt to make the new drive the system drive. Are all of the drives formatted NTFS at 4096 or higher? Have you checked all of your CMOS settings?

Re: the new SATA drive - I would make it your video capture/playback drive. Leave a slower IDE drive for the system. I use SATA drives for audio/video work, and an IDE drive for my system. Works great. And as previously recommended, just be sure to download the drivers for SATA or it won't show up for formatting.

I think there might be some data missing in your description... are you saying that you can run your system fine with any other application?

Do those other applications run fine with Vegas installed but not running on the system?

It's only after you've had Vegas running for 2-10 minutes that you get the problem?

Here's my guess - you're doing something that's relatively CPU and hard drive intensive (render?) and the internal temp of the system is causing a freeze/reboot. If this is the case - re-check your cooling system, and make sure all components are mounted properly - particularly the CPU heatsink. I've seen systems that will run fine under web surfing/email/office app usage - but as soon as you put a media app on and start pushing things around it gets really hairy.

Another thing is the power supply - maybe the standing amperage required to run the video card and one or two drives will hold up, but once you get into strobing several drives and holding up video display you might get into trouble with your 12V rail. So double-check the rating of your power supply and do some round numbers on the requirements of your components to make sure you have enough headroom in your juice factory.

If that doesn't describe your scenario, feel free to ignore any and all of my advice.

:-)

Good luck.

*Did you make sure to install the AMD driver for your x2? You should.
*There are issues with that Asus mobo i believe - search into that.
Did you set that up properly?
*Yes, with any new system today you need a proper pwr supply - check that.

Rule out any other hrdwr possibilities (fwire, other pci cards etc)?
You shouldn't have any issues with the x2 you're describing, my guess it's realted to sumpin else going on.

x2 3800 eh?
Just in case....are you OCing it?
I have a x2 4400+ with the 1mb cache and vegas is fine and dandy. No need to oc it.
You introduce a whole new world of system issues when you OC, so make sure you've covered all the bases.

That said I would agree with the last reply, OCing or not - I'd check out a proper HSF installation and all cooling issues (these x2's run cooler than intel dual-core's though). Use a "very thin" amount of arctic silver 5 and the stock (or better hsf like most do) and make sure all is well.
This x2 4400 sits at 30c idle and 46c at full bore.

If that's not it then I'd check your ram (and it's settings - espec if you're overclocking).

I‘m sorry for my poor English and I can see that it has lead to some misunderstandings.

My problem WAS only when I START Vegas for the first time after a boot/reboot of Windows, then it will hang/freeze, but I think I have found the error and a solution.

If I open Device Manager just after I boot Windows, all devices are OK, but when I start Vegas and unknown device appear and it only happen when I start Vegas.

I tried to update the driver and it asked for “ASUS Virtual Video Capture Device Driver”. I don’t know why this happen, because the graphic card has no video-in. Updated the graphic driver, but it didn’t help.

Then I disabled the Device and now Vegas start as fast as it should ;-)

Now I have a fully update PC. All drivers are updated; a friend of mine helped me through Bios-settings and everything runs fine.

Thanks for your time to help me.

PS. I paid the retailer to build my PC, so I had to check al your suggestions one by one and it seems that the retailer had followed your recommendations ;)
