Vegas in Europe

Hi all,

I'm reading this forum as much as I can, and it seems that in the US Vegas is becoming a solid NLE with a lot of users.

Here in Europe though it's very hard to find users, especially in The Netherlands where a common saying is: "What a farmer doesn't know, he won't eat". And I can tell you, the users in Holland can be counted on one hand.

The broadcast-industry is all centralized here, and I work with a lot of people (editors, cameramen, directors, designer etc etc) who all know a few words: 'Avid' and 'Final Cut Pro'. Some of them know another word: 'Premiere'. All the other words are frowned upon, and it's really hard to convince people to come by and have a look at Vegas for an hour or so.

I'm trying to tell as many people as possible about the good things, promoting a great piece of software, even showing them the things I've broadcasted on national TV with it, but it's really hard standing alone in this.

I even sent an email to SF asking if I could help them promote Vegas, sell it to other editors and stuff, but they didn't react at all!!!! Not even a 'thanks for your reaction'...

So, if there's anyone from Europe and especially The Netherlands who can tell me about their convincing-others-experiences, feel free to reply...

I'll just keep trying ;)

Mark

It's similar here in Germany, Austria, Swiss (I am in Germany, Saarland - not that far from Netherlands). We decided to do some things on our own to promote Vegas. So we builded a homepage to have some basic infos provided and a kind of support forum.

Do you speak German, too? Take a look at it. Hompage is:

www.vegasvideo.de

Forum is:

www.vegasvideo.de/forum

I know some people from Sonic Foundry are just starting a promo tour in Europe right now. So probably some things are changing (to the best) very soon.

Next week IBC will be here in Holland - http://www.ibc.org - .. No representation of SonicFoundry, No Vegas (Video), BUT of course some Sony-stands. It says Sony is also in the product category 'Editing-Video'..
I'll let you know if I can find ANYTHING about Vegas at this year's IBC...

For now I think I'll just start offering free editing time to get me some jobzzz

Grazie, sorry. I think I was wrong talking about a Europe-Tour. Infos I have only talk about some stations in Germany.
You might contact Heidi Iligaray or Michael Bryant from Sonic Foundry as they seem to head this promo-tour.
But I can't imagine two of the US-SoFo team travel so far only to make a promo-tour in Germany only. They will be there in Munich, Cologne, Berlin, Hamburg. So - why not London!?

I've got a world wide users map here at http://www.vegasusers.com/whereareyou/
It's by no means inclusive of all worldwide Vegas users since there's only 388 people listed. However, there are a good number in Europe and many have posted their contact information. This might be a quick way for you to make contact with others in your area. Aslo, encourage any users you know or meet to add themselves to the map.

I've heard of a couple of new collaborations start up between people who found other nearby users on the map!

It'll be interesting to see what Sony does at IBC.
Down here is Australia VV seems to have quite a following from what I can gather, despite it not being heavily promoted. The local agent was doing the best he could at the last SMPTE exhibition in Sydney but when you can only afford a fraction of the floor space of Avid etc it's hard to make a dent.

I find one way to push it is to mention it's from the company that built Sound Forge, that's a name that has a lot of respect.

It does seem to be popular with the newcomers as well, it's very hard to get anyone to move outside their comfort zone so I tend not to push it to anyone that isn't thinking of making a move.

BTW, I can accross a very interesting use of VV. It was rcommended to a major football club by an their IT staff. The reasoning threw me for quite a while. They said the advantage was its database integration. Being a database programmer that really confused me until I though about scripts. So what the club uses VV for is going through footage of matches to award point for whatever, obviously they can use scripts to keys write data into a database. Now that's a real bit of lateral thinking, actually its a potential I doubt anyone had thought of.

Sony camcorders are popular the world over, and I wouldn't be surprised to see prominent mention of Vegas (or whatever Sony decides to call it) in the future wherever Sony camcorders are sold.

Hi, here's someone from the Netherlands. After reading a lot of posts, I just registered, read the FAQ and think I'm ready for my first reply. Hope it's ok to reply in a rather old post.

I am too really amazed there are not many Vegas users in Europe. By reading several vegas forums, I decided to buy Spot's book. And after calling a lot of bookstore's, I was able to find only one book in my hometown. Go figure!! The price of 62 euro's was way too high, but I just didn't want to wait for Amazon, for a couple of weeks. The book is easy to read, but sometimes I have to use a dictionary or a Webster to let me explain some technical terms. O well, I can always ask around here, right?
