VEGAS is lagging while play 4k footage.

iEmby wrote on 7/14/2024, 6:54 PM

Just look at this clip.

i was using Adobe Premier 2024 and VEGAS Pro 21 _ 315

look at the playback difference between both of them.

as when i change curser to somewhere else on timeline in adobe it stop playback. which is expectable.

but vegas is keep playing it when change curser position and start lagging.

same system, same clip, different software,

what is reason behind it.

Thank you for uploading the MediaInfo report. From that report, the source of the video is a phone and the report shows that the video has been recorded at a Variable Frame Rate (VFR) ranging from what looks to be 28 fps up to 60 fps - that's a considerable difference in fps. As discussed many times on the forum over many years, Vegas Pro doesn't like VFR very much. The most often given recommendation is to transcode VFR video to Constant Frame Rate (CFR) via a free transcoder such as Handbrake or Shutter Encoder.

i did it in media encode in 50fps 3840 x 2160 but it make difference in my all editing 1-3 frames offset or we can say unmatched video audio sync.

just wanna know... variable frame rate is also a part of video shooting and video editing world. then why VEGAS is not giving it a chance.??

and how adobe seems so smooth while playing. i have same machine for both softwares. and i love VEGAS but is not so smooth..

Variable frame rate is a compression trick during recording; like so many similar games phones play when recording, it is not a friendly situation for nonlinear editors.

Apple, Adobe, Vegas all handle this stuff differently. You have shown the Premiere also stutters with high frame rate VFR, laying to rest some of the other claims made on this forum.

Which NLE you prefer for minimal timeline performance with high-maintenance source is entirely a personal matter. Vegas may perform better with some material, and Adobe with another.

Perhaps the phone makers -- Apple, Samsung, google, and Motorola -- could work a little harder to give our poor editing systems a chance . . .

Lets fact check @Dexcon . I follow his advice, I transcode using his information and this is the result

Where did your advice go wrong Dexcon, it's very important you bother to test what you're saying, maybe you left out some details?

atleast then VEGAS should show a warning and a suggestion to transcode media before use (just like Kdenlive, an OpenSource Video Editor did), so that our time can be save.

You have shown the Premiere also stutters with high frame rate VFR, laying to rest some of the other claims made on this forum.

premier is working smooth with that VFR media i showed in video. it just stops when user change position of cursor while playing on timeline. but VEGAS keep playing which most of time lags and sometimes it causes crashes.

Which NLE you prefer for minimal timeline performance with high-maintenance source is entirely a personal matter. Vegas may perform better with some material, and Adobe with another.

i always prefer VEGAS, and if there will be any drawback in VEGAS I will always want to see VEGAS improving in that side.

After so many years of that not happening, and no sense that will change anytime soon AND this huge library of already encoded VFR phone footage, it should be Vegas that comes to the front and play it better.

Also it should be noticed how poorly the @Dexcon no details method of transcoding works, and that is CFR. So the decoder could be improved upon because Premiere plays that much better, as does other editors.

I don't want to be ants at a picnic, but I have zero issues with VFR from my iPhone 14 (native app), full speed preview best/full.

Even when mixing with 4K HEVC from my Fuji and GoPro.

Of course if I need to do heavy colour-grading, warp transitions, etc., then it's out to Cineform where I can match with my highest (constant) bitrate.

I'll get my coat.

@ChrisD Chris brings up a good point, @iEmby did you want to upload that file or another from your phone that you have tested first in Vegas and knows it plays poorly. Upload to a file sharing site and see if we also have your same problem. I also have S23Ultra but have never tried editing in these newer builds, but not seen the results you're seeing in older builds, also I use HEVC rather than AVC.

@Dexcon You aren't providing enough details, I'm not going to give you the answer, because it's been my experience when I do, you old guard Vegas users will revert back to your old advice. Think about what you're not saying, rather then what you are

RogerS wrote on 7/14/2024, 9:33 PM

VFR handling has improved greatly in VEGAS since say the days of VP 18. Whether it's editable appears to depend on other factors as well like the magnitude of the variability, GOP length, AVC vs HEVC, etc. Pick the most challenging to playback for each (highly variable, long GOP, HEVC, 10-bit) and it will be a mess.

For ShutterEncoder's advanced settings try to set GOP to your framerate and try a tune like zerolatency.

More discussion of optimal settings here:
https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/shutter-encoder-advice--146016/?page=1

Todd-AO wrote on 7/14/2024, 10:12 PM

So now lets compare the @Dexcon transcode advice vs the @RogerS transcode advice. It's a night and day difference even though both files are 4K60 AVC. Playback is 1.5x Dexcon version first.

It's my contention, especially at higher framerates/resolutions never to say 'just transcode',

RogerS wrote on 7/14/2024, 10:21 PM

Very good demonstration.

I originally was a "victim" of such advice with Handbrake- the default "fast" settings performed badly in VEGAS. With more research I came upon Production Standard and then included that in any Handbrake recommendations I made before moving over to ShutterEncoder as it's more versatile.

... he is shooting videos with same settings VFR ones or may be S23 Ultra has this default setting for video shoot.

Unfortunately, most popular smartphones including iPhones record in VFR. All the Samsung phones that I've owned, including my current Samsung S23 Ultra, don't provide an option to record in CFR (wish they did though as well as recording in 25/50 PAL-based frame rates, not just NTSC-based frame rates).

Though from some years ago, the following webpage gives a good overview of smartphones and VFR video:

https://momofilmfest.com/smartphone-iphone-filmmaking-what-is-variable-frame-rate-vfr/

Both the above link and the link in 'iPhones' mention audio syncing as being a problem with video originating in VFR.

There are two schools of thought as to why VFR is used, the first is that frame rate is reduced to allow for better capture of low-lit locations, and the second is that frame rate can be reduced and thus a smaller file size if there isn't a lot of movement in the image. Of course, it might be a bit of both.

FWIW, I transcode S23 Ultra video from VFR to CFR and from 30 fps to 25 fps in the one run either in Vegas Pro (which requires individually rendering each event) or in DaVinci Resolve (which has batch rendering). Fortunately, audio synching is not a requirement in the phone video.

@iEmby In the little bit of testing I've done it seems to play fine when scrubbing and playing across edits, there does seem to be a bug though, the audio track needs to be progressed 14frames to for sync, there are 14 frames of audio missing. Audio and Video match in capcut and resolve and are synced. All editors want to make a 55fps project, not just Vegas.

Manually enter 3840x2160 60fps, bring video in say no to automatic settings.

unlink audio from video, progress it 14 frames, relink.

Not sure what's going on with your Vegas as far as the delay after pausing. I did think I saw the delay once, other potential problem is that I have 24gb of Vram which Vegas is using to cache frames maybe obscuring the problem for me, if there is one.

OKAY... so what will be the last words for me... ?

i am helpless sometimes when other user didn't find any similar error.

@iEmby in File IO set Enable Legacy AVC decoding, and then set 'Hardware decoder to use' to OFF, manually set frame rate to 60, if you have enough CPU that should work and be in sync?

It's probably a Vegas AMD GPU bug, need AMD people to check your file.

Here I also found MxCompound is doing a reasonable job with it, including across cuts. Where it doesn't work well is if you have 2 clips at once (overlap a fade, for example).

I manually set it to 60fps and tested it with my 8GB 2080 Super.

Frame rate                     : 55.488 FPS
Minimum frame rate             : 23.089 FPS
Maximum frame rate             : 60.040 FPS
Real frame rate                : 60.000 FPS
