Vegas leaves black bars on my 4:3 jpeg files

I import a lot of jpeg and paint shop files to use as backgrounds in Vegas. When I creat the files they are 720x540 pixels, 4:3 aspect ratio with no resizing of pixels. When I view the preview window, there are two small black bars along the sides of the image. The bars go away when I select "no" for "maintain aspect ratio" in the Event Pan/Crop window.

How can I keep my 4:3 jpeg files from being strecthed/resized?

the images should be 720 x 573 if you want to avoid letterboxing and aspect distortion. or 655 x 480.

Click on the Pan/Crop icon on the image event.

Then, right-click on the image in the pan/crop dialog and select "match output aspect." This will get rid of the letterbox bars but, of course, your image will be cropped.

Dang! That's what I needed to know.

Thanks a bunch.

Strangley enough, 720x573 for NTSC left black bars as well (maybe you were talking about PAL?)

Wit some trial and error, it looks like 720x528 leaves no black bars anywhere with 1:1 display and no stretching. Freakin wierd.

The aspect ratio required to avoid black bars depends on how you import the picture: You need one aspect ratio if you ijmport it as progressive with an aspect ratio of 1.000 (that's the one Spot provided), whereas you only need to match your native video aspect ratio (720x480 for NTSC DV) if you change its aspect ratio to match DV (0.9091) by selecting the event and changing its properties.
