Vegas Movie Studio 17 versus Vegas Pro 18

I have been using Movie Studio Platinum 16, before I upgraded to Movie Studio 17 Platinum. MVS 16 worked fine, I could use quicktime and export dnxhd without any problems. And it has been very stable.

MVS 17 would never work properly. It was slow and crashed whenever I tried to open the 'render as' window, so I was left to only use the bare minimum of render options. When I discussed it with Vegas, they just said it was my 'lousy' pc - not up to spec.

I tried to tell them that the program worked mostly fine, expect for the 'render as' window, which had a coding problem. They didnt believe me and their standard reply was that my pc didn't comply with minimum specifications.

However, to make a long story short. Today I got a very good offer from Vegas for Vegas Pro 18. I thought, why don't I try the trial version to see how it performs on my pc. I downloaded it and opened a MVS 17 project file and played the project from start to finish. No problem. No lagging. Best preview. Color correction - no problem.

I then tried to export a small file and really expected a crash with the 'render as' window. But, voila, the program performed there as well. So, I will try it for a few more days, before I make my decision to purchase. But, I guess I already have made my decision.

And I had given up on Vegas ....

By the way, my pc is a Dell laptop with i5 processor, 2 cores cpu ,16 gb ram and intel 4000 integrated graphics.

I know, it shouldn't work, but it does.

Just wanted to share this.

I know, it shouldn't work, but it does.

Maybe for now with your used files, but I doubt if all the possibilities and sources of VPro 18 can be used.

I now have Vegas Movie Studio 16 Platinum and Vegas Pro 18 working fine on my machine. After successfully running Vegas Pro 18 I decided it was time to try my MVS17 Platinum again. It still doesnt work. When trying to 'render as' it crashes every time. MVS 16 and VP 18 does the rendering fine without any problems.

I think it is time Vegas takes a look at their code for MVS17 and admit that it has bugs.Vegas Pro 18 also immediately found my old Intel 4000 graphis and optimized for that one.

My opinion is that Vegas should make a free patch for MVS17 incorporating their new automatic gpu driver detection and auto gpu configuration for hardware acceleration. It should be made available asap for current buyers of MVS 17.

I saw the same problems with the first build of VMS PL 17, but with build 204 I can do all I want, without a problem with default settings in Options/Preferences/ Video and --- /File I/O.
What build do you use?

I de installed it yesterday, because I couldnt see the point in having it on the pc, since it doesnt work. After your comment above I installed it again (built 204). It still crashes at the same place -'render as'.

There is definitely a difference between rendering with VMS17 or Vpro18. On my PC (see my signature) VPro18 renders the same project more than twice as fast as when rendering with VMS17. But to be honest, incorporating features of Vpro18 asap into VMS17....? Maybe VMS18 will have such features.

With regard to my trquest for a patch, asap. Well, I paid for a product that cant be used, at an upgrade price, almost the same as full price. Usually when a supplier delivers a product that doesnt work, you can return it within a timeperiod. Since this is not workable with Vegas (ask those who have tried) I dont think it is unreasonable to ask Vegas to incorporate some code fron Vegas Pro into a patch for mvs 17, if it can lead to a more stable software, for a lot of users ( it seems).
