Vegas Movie Studio HD 11.0 Won't Open

Last week, I began having problems with my version of Vegas MS. Up until about Tuesday or Wednesday, it was running fine. But then, Thursday night, I couldn't open it. I would click on the icon, but nothing would pop up. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing several times over. I've raised the privileges, updated my video driver and quicktime (also deleted it to see if that would work). I've tried uninstalling with an uninstaller program and then reinstalling Vegas with it. I tried to start it with Task Manager, but the computer froze and I had to restart it. When viewing resource monitor as I click on the Vegas icon, I do see the vegas.exe pop up, but it and the error report launcher both come up as "terminated". The program won't run in compatibility mode or as administrator. I've tried to check for memory problems, but nothing's turned up. I've also downloaded updates to the Vegas program, but even those had similar problems.

I am at my wit's end here, and I could really use any help at all since I have projects to work on with Sony Vegas.

Are you not able to start a new project -- or are you only stuck when trying to open an existing project?

What version of Windows do you have? Have you manually gone to Windows Update and ensured you have even the non-critical updates (which don't install automatically and can include important drivers and fixes)?

Do you have the latest version of Quicktime?

How fast is your processor and how much RAM do you have? How much free, clean space is on your hard drive? When did you last run Disk Cleanup?

What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it?

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software? (This will not affect any work you have in progress.) Have you ensured you're installing the latest build of version 11?

I can't start the program at all. No window pops up.

I have Windows 7, the latest version. I also have the latest version of Quicktime.

I have 4 GB installed on my RAM, with 3.80 usable. My processor is 2.53 GHz. I ran disk cleanup the week before the trouble began, and have done it twice since.

I don't use a camcorder, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled so many times that I've lost count. The build I have is the current one, and I've also tried loading older versions, but they have the same problem.

Are you sure you don't have a dual core or quad core processor, Catherine? It's unlikely you have a 2.53 ghz single core processor, unless your computer is several years old.

Have you manually gone to Windows Update and ensured you have all of the updates, including the non-critical ones?

How much free space is on your hard drive?

How are you launching your program? Have you tried launching the program from its Program Files? Have you tried launching it as an Administrator?

These are the stats for my HP Pavilion g6:

Intel Core i3-380M dual-core processor (2.53GHz, 3MB cache, 35W TDP)
Intel HM55 chipset
Integrated Intel HD graphics
4GB DDR3-1066 RAM with 3.80 FREE, (2x 2GB; supports up to 8GB - 2x 4GB)
500GB 7200RPM Seagate hard drive (ST9500325AS)

I've got all Windows Updates.

I've tried launching it as administrator and from the program files. Nothing's worked.

I have no idea what is going on. It must be something obvious we're just not seeing. You have an adequately powered machine with, apparently, all the necessary installations.

You may need to contact Sony support on this one.

The crazy thing is that your first post seems to imply that it used to work until a few weeks ago. So something you've added to your computer in the past few weeks has apparently messed something up.

You've done a deep scan for viruses and malware, haven't you?

I've already contacted Sony, but they haven't answered me yet. I've run a sweep for viruses, and still it's not working.

However, when I am viewing the Resource Monitor and try starting Vegas, the .exe does come up, but it and the error report launcher is coming up as 'terminated'.

This may not help but It has worked for me in the past on certain software. I do not know what uninstalling program you used but I would try Revo Uninstaller. I think they give you a 30 day trial with the Pro version. And then run the free version of CCleaner to clean the left over registry. It sounds like you have a corrupted file somewhere. Like I said it may not work, but its not working now. Never had much luck contacting support.
Hope you get it working. I know its frustrating having software that fails to respond.

I tried Revo, but that hasn't worked either. I'm probably going to have to buy another version of Vegas. Thanks for helping, though.

Hey, Catherine. I am having the same problem, and have jumped through as many hoops as you have with the drivers, unintalling, attempting to open as the administrator, and my favorite, attempting to contact Sony to no avail.

Did you ever find a solution, or do I need to purchase another editing system?

Thanks!
