Vegas not playing AVI files from my digicam

I am trying out Vegas 4 as a solution for both slideshow and DVD movies creator. I was able to capture from my DV cam (the sound somehow is funky, the picture looks fine). I also have a digital camera Canon A70 that I have used to shot some 30 seconds movies. The problem is that Vegas 4 will not play the video but plays audio. These clips were 640x480. They are avi files and I pplay in windows media player and another video editor (Videowave). Anybody has a solution?

How did you capture these from your DV camera? You should be using a firewire card which would yield 720x480 video and 48Khz audio which should not be funky at all. In fact, it will be an exact copy of what’s on the DV camera tape!

This suggests that you did an analog capture of your DV footage which is not the best quality. I would imagine Vegas can’t find whatever codec that was used to capture the video at 640x480. Try using a firewire card to do DV captures and you’ll have no problem.

Could it be that you need the Mjpeg codec? Try downloading a demo, I bet it's the solution.

He's talking about the video from the A70 still camera. You definitely need to get the mjpeg codec. Around $30, I think, from http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/technicalsV3.htm.

Some people have described a method of opening and saving in Quicktime, but I think you need to have the full version of quicktime in order to do that, I'm vague on the technique.

To clarify: these clips were recorded using the Canon Poershot A70 gigital camera. The camera has a movie mode and will allow capturing videos at 640x480 for 30 seconds per clip. The file type is .avi. I paly these clips with windows media player, quicktime or Videowave Movie Maker. But Vegas 4 can not play the video, only sound.

Ok, sounds like I need the mjpeg. I am surprised that the little programs like windows media player or videowave can handle it but not a big program like vegas. Any reason why vegas is not supporting it?

Any free alternatives to MJPEG Codec?
