Vegas? Oxford chip? Device driver?

For the first time ever, yesterday, I was editing a DV project on Vegas when the whole system shut down and restarted. When Windows XP Home (SP1) returned to the screen, there was a prompt saying a "serious error" had occurred involving a device driver.

This seems to relate to a Cobra 120GB firewire drive which makes Vegas (now 5) stall for 20 seconds, then resume, repeatedly during use--but a newer Cobra 250 GB drive has no such effect on the system, runs like buttuh. Any thoughts on what's going wrong? Both drives run off Oxford 911 chips, I think, and they're both plugged in to the same firewire card (I have two--this is the one that is not a Texas Instruments card, as I had read that Cobras don't like TI chips). I'm considering piggybacking the 120 into the 250, or alternatively plugging the 120 into a second firewire card I have on board.

I didn't post this as off-topic because there was some brief comment about the swap file or the temp file used by Vegas as being part of the 20-second pause mystery.
