vegas preview different from actual hdv footage

I am running vegas 8.1 on a vista 64bit machine. When I load on to the time line my hdv files I notice they seem to be softened abit.
I am using best and auto for the preview window setting.
The footage off the camera is very pristine so I know there is something amiss here. I have the project set at hdv60i which is what I used on the camera. I did notice while messing with preview window settings that if I chose best full the pristine quality comes back but will stutter when an effect is added.
I have an ATI 4850 card that came installed with the Dell computer and have all the latest bio and vid card updates.
Any clue to why the soft look of footage well appreciated. : )

Except at best-full, the preview window is at a lower resolution than the footage. It is also tends to be darker. Your final result will be as the original.

The playback will become slower as the rez of the preview window is increased.

good - full is also full resolution, high quality preview. It will display what the input footage is, at best. Best is for if you're doing images/video resizing last I recall.

If using Auto because Full is too big, right-click on the Preview window, and turn "Scale to fit Preview Window" off.
This will help a lot.
