Vegas Pro 10.0a still freezes with FRAPS?

Information on this has been scarce, so I'd appreciate your experiences: I've been thinking of upgrading my Vegas setup but it seems like FRAPS (popular game capture app) codec is STILL broken in Vegas Pro 10.0a. Specifically, importing files is very slow, which I've seen reported by other users as freezes and/or crashes. Importing older projects with FRAPS files will take hours or even days.

This is disappointing if true, since it worked without a problem in 9.0c and below but something in 9.0d or 9.0e messed it up.

Converting to a supported codec has been suggested as a workaround, but this is tedious due to the quality loss and waste of time it incurs. It really takes the fun out of spontaneous "Capture these clips, edit in Vegas, then upload to YouTube" process.

Has anyone encountered these errors? I've sent a support message to Sony requesting if this is a known issue on their radar, and reached out to FRAPS too — but it seems like something in Vegas broke it.

Many thanks in advance.

Yeah this is really frustrating. I saw the upgrade deal for 10 and jumped on it . Vegas 10 was a complete was of money for me unless this problem is fixed since I mostly use Vegas for gaming videos. I have no problems in version 8.

Thanks vt7dust. Has anyone else been frustrated like us?

I submitted a ticket to Sony on 2010-11-23 and haven't heard back.

Can't help with FRAPS as I don't use it but I get the same issues when I use AVIScreen Classic. I end up batch re-encoding them via VirtualDub.

Re: game videos

Are you doing HD or SD? If you're doing SD then I'd highly suggest you get something to record on to, like a camera/DV VCR. It's MUCH better quality vs screen captures & you can up the game's quality way way up.

Check out this recent thread.

Using the downloaded aviplug.dll in 10a, things rendered from virtualdub load much, much quicker. I've only used FRAPS for capturing GoogleEarth imagery, but it loads very quickly. In fact, I just tried and it loaded a 30 sec clips almost "instantly". The captured imagery was 2288x994 px, 29.97fps, progressive.

Give it a try. Good luck.

Thanks, that definitely sounds worth trying. With fraps a 30 sec clip isn't really enough to test with. Fraps files split around 4GB and I typically try to import 10-20 at a time. I can sometimes, slowly get one of these files to import. But I can never get multiple files onto the timeline. I think smaller fraps files will still import in 10.0a.

I also submitted a support ticket several weeks ago and got no response.

edit: thanks again, the dll swap lets me import my fraps files! Hopefully there are no problems that come up from using the old dll. Everything seems to even be much faster than it did in 8, especially preview. I guess I can start experimenting with 10. Now why can't Sony fix the current dll :/
